Algonquin College REB Recruitment of Community Member

Be the Community Perspective: Join Algonquin College’s Research Ethics Board

Algonquin College’s Research Ethics Board (REB) is seeking to recruit a volunteer community member to join the Board. The REB plays an essential role in ensuring that all research involving human participants conducted under the auspices of the College meets the highest ethical standards and respects the rights and welfare of participants.

In brief, all research proposals involving human participants require evaluation by the REB to determine if they meet the quality and ethical principles and standards for research involving human participants, as set out in the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2022).

The role of community members on the REB is unique and at arm’s length from the institution. The community member brings an independent, community-based perspective to the Board’s decisions, primarily reflecting the perspective of the participant.

Required qualifications for Community Member candidates:

  1. No direct affiliation with Algonquin College.
  2. An interest in ensuring that research at the College is conducted according to the highest ethical standards.
  3. Completion of the TCPS2 Course on Research Ethics (CORE) Tutorial (free online tutorial) through the Panel on Research Ethics would be preferred. This must be completed by the successful candidate upon recruitment, with the provision of the certificate. The tutorial takes approximately 4 hours and is self-paced.
  4. Approval from the candidate’s employer (if applicable) before applying.
  5. Commitment to serve a minimum of 3 hours per month to participate in the REB’s monthly Full-board meetings (scheduled virtually on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 1-3 p.m.) and contribute to application reviews.
  6. Commitment to serve a term of appointment of 3 years, with possible renewal of the term.

By joining the REB, you will have opportunities to:

  • Expand knowledge (PD offerings) and experience in Research Ethics and Research Design.
  • Build a network not only across our College but also in relevant other communities.
  • Develop your multidisciplinary research capacity.

Please submit a statement of interest and current résumé, or direct any questions, to REBadmin@algonquincollege.com.
