If you’re looking to serve your community, a career in Public Safety is a great choice. Build skills, gain real-world experience, and prepare for a meaningful career. Here are some of the programs Algonquin College has to offer.

Bachelor of Public Safety

This four-year degree program prepares learners to take a systematic approach to public safety, with a focus on preventing, coordinating, and investigating both human-made and natural threats. Designed to develop future leaders, the program emphasizes hands-on learning to get students ready to respond to complex and evolving challenges.

Students strengthen their skills through work-integrated learning, and partnerships may offer students the opportunity to earn industry-recognized credentials, such as Basic Emergency Management certification and Incident Command System (ICS) training, helping graduates be ready for their careers.

Community and Justice Services

The two-year Community and Justice Services program focuses on alternatives to traditional policing and incarceration, while addressing real-world issues such as criminalization, poverty, housing insecurity, food access, and immigration.

Learn by doing. Communication, empathy, and respect are at the heart of the program as students develop the skills to work with diverse individuals and communities while honoring their dignity and humanity. Experienced industry professionals bring students’ learning to life through scenarios, practical exercises, and hands-on experiences preparing them for meaningful work in the field.

Students complete a four-month placement with a community or justice service organization, gaining real-world experience and contributing to positive social change. Along the way, students may also participate in community outreach initiatives and tours of institutional programs, helping them build connections, confidence, and career-ready skills.

Paramedic

In just two years, students can step into a vital role in the health care system as a Paramedic. This immersive program prepares students for the fast-paced world of paramedicine, where they will respond to medical emergencies, assess and treat patients, learn to communicate effectively with individuals and health care teams, and deliver high-quality, compassionate care when it matters most.

Students learn from experienced paramedics and industry experts in the cutting-edge Paramedic Lab, where realistic emergency scenarios mirror real-life calls and help them develop and sharpen essential skills and competencies. Additional training takes place in the immersive simulation lab, where multidimensional scenarios bring emergencies to life. Together, these hands-on experiences help students build confidence, critical thinking skills, and clinical judgment before entering the field.

Learning continues beyond the classroom with a practicum, giving students the opportunity to gain experience within hospital settings, followed by a four-month preceptorship in the final term. During this placement, students work alongside active paramedics, gaining firsthand experience and professional insight into the career.

Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter, this comprehensive program is for you. Students train alongside experienced firefighting and first-responder professionals through a dynamic mix of classroom learning and more than 400 hours of hands-on experience, including live-fire training, realistic simulations, and rigorous fitness preparation.

Police Foundations

The two-year Police Foundations program introduces students to modern policing with a focus on community safety. Students learn about police powers and procedures, community policing, and investigation skills, while building a strong foundation for working in a variety of communities.

A mix of theory and practice supports students to develop the skills needed for today’s policing environment through hands-on learning in research, communication, and operational readiness. A fitness program, aligned with law enforcement testing standards, and training in mental health awareness for first responders, de-escalation techniques, and scenario-based simulations in a fully equipped simulation apartment focused on real-world policing situations prepare students for their future career.
