We would first need to address how long you have been out of active nursing and put together an education and clinical plan for you. The length of time may need to be addressed by the College of Nurses. Algonquin College offers a Part-time Certificate-to-Diploma program that you could enter once your other needs have been addressed.

Returning to your nursing career depends on many factors and thus the timeframe for each nurse varies. It depends on what courses and services you decide to participate in. For most people, it will take between 6 and 12 months (for nurses who are deemed exam-eligible by the CNO) on a part-time basis to complete the program. It will take additional time if the College of Nurses has different requirements for registration. Additional time will need to be added to your plan to secure employment if you need to write the registration examination.
All programs begin in September, but we have activities that nurses can participate in before the start of the program. Please contact the Coordinator for further information.
We offer educational and clinical updates for nurses who have been out of nursing less than fifteen years. We assist those nurses who are currently registered or looking to reinstate their registration with the CNO. Depending on your needs or the College of Nurses requirement, we can individualize a program for you. Please contact the Coordinator for your individualized educational plan.
The first step in becoming a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario is to contact the regulatory body for nursing in Ontario, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), and ask for a registration package. Call 1-800 -387-5526 or visit the CNO website.
Once the CNO receives your registration information and supporting documents from your home country, they will assess all this information and decide how you should proceed with the registration process. This can take a period of time. Please feel free to contact our Program Coordinator before, during or after you have contacted the CNO for support and advice on activities to assist you in returning to your nursing career .
Once you have received your letter of assessment, please contact the Coordinator of the Orientation to Nursing in Ontario Program for assistance on how to create your individualized plan for registration in Ontario.
