Who should apply for this program?

This program is well-suited for students who possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are critical thinkers, can be self-directed, and are detail-oriented, organized and committed to achieving excellence in their work.

How many people are accepted into the program for each intake?

Thirty-eight (38) students are accepted in the Fall (September) intake and thirty-two (32) for the Spring (May) intake.

What field placements are included in the program?

The Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) program provides students with one hands-on field experience while in the program. Upon successful completion of prerequisite courses, office placement occurs towards the end of the third semester of the program. Students are assigned to dental offices within the jurisdictional area of Algonquin College. This placement allows students to consolidate knowledge learned throughout the program and to refine practical skills to an acceptable level of competence. Students must complete 60 hours in their field placement office.

Can I get a job in the field while I am in the program?

It would be difficult to work in a dental office until all skills have been taught and practiced.

What kinds of jobs are available when I graduate?

Upon successful completion of the NDAEB examination, graduates may find employment as dental assistants in general and specialty practices, community health settings, dental sales, and dental supply companies.

What is the average salary earned by graduates of the program?

Based upon informal survey information, the average wage of an entry-level dental assistant is between $18.00-$20.00/hr.

Are there jobs available to graduates of the program?

The Graduate Employment Report for 2017-2018 indicates that 89% of survey respondents were employed. The average annual level salary in 2017-2018 in the report was $39,599.
