What is Faculty Led Travel?

Faculty Led Travel are international trips that are organized by faculty for students to participate in international experiences. These are great opportunities to connect with your faculty members and fellow classmates, allow you to engage in another culture and/or country outside of Canada and provide you with valuable skills and knowledge for your career.

Why Participate in Faculty Led Travel?

Faculty Led Trips are a great and safe way to experience a new country. They provide an exciting alternative to learning as your faculty member(s) incorporates your curriculum with an international flare. The trips are usually open to an entire class or program and is related to your field of study. While there is no set list of experiences, as they sometimes change from year to year, check with your teachers and program coordinators to see what opportunity might be available to you.

Faculty Travel Policies

Faculty/Employees undertaking a Faculty Led international experience with students must follow AA44: International Travel and Safety – Students In addition, Faculty/Employees traveling internationally on college business must follow AD17 – International Travel and Safety – Employees. It is the Faculty’s responsibility to complete the Approval Risk Assessment for International Travel Involving Students form that is required for student international travel. Using theApproval Risk Assessment for International Travel Involving Students Formprovide the necessary information and identify the risks associated with the intended travel as well as establish approval from your approval authority.

You can complete the form in Word. Once completed, please print and sign the form and submit a hard copy to your approval authority. Once it has been reviewed and approved, the form can be submitted to the International Education Centre, C021.

In order to complete the form, you must visit the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (Global Affairs Canada) website to review important travel safety and security information. Be sure to check the Global Affairs Canada website for specific advisories related to your destination country.

Pre-departure Orientation: All students traveling on Faculty Led trip must participate in a mandatory Pre-departure Orientation.


Faculty Led Award

This award is designed for faculty who will be leading a study or work integrated experience outside of Canada and the United States for two or more Algonquin College students. We aim to support faculty-led international education experiences by making more affordable:

  1. International education opportunities; and,
  2. International paid or volunteer work experiences with profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Please note: funding is not guaranteed.

students The faculty-led international education or work experiences may take place anytime during the participating students’ program of studies at Algonquin College. Please note: individual students participating in faculty-led programs are eligible to apply for the Algonquin College Award for International Study & Work Integrated Learning Award for Students.

Award Value

1-13 day* international placement $1000
14 day* or more international placement $2000

* Number of days indicates the time frame from the start date until the end date of the international experience. This should be indicated on a letter from your host organization, company or school. This does not include any travel to, from, before or after the confirmed experience abroad.

Application Deadlines:

Fall Term For travel in Fall 2019 Monday, July 1, 2019
Winter Term For travel in Winter 2020 Sunday, November 10, 2019
Spring Term For travel in Spring/Summer 2020 Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020
