Treaties Recognition Week Film Series
Nov 07, 2023 - Nov 09, 2023
Join the Mamidosewin Centre in commemorating Treaties Recognition Week through an educational film series. Learn more about Indigenous rights, issues, and ways of being. Through this, we can create a greater understanding and nurture relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
These films will coincide with International Inuit Day and Indigenous Veterans Day, and offer a chance for all to learn more about complex Indigenous topics.
All films will be followed by a discussion and a Q&A. Refreshments will be provided as well.
Content warning: Subject matter may be disturbing (colonialism, racism, and images of war, etc.)
People of the Seal, Part 1 – November 7 • 2pm-4pm
People of the Seal, Part 1 is compiled from some of the most vivid footage ever filmed of the life of the Netsilik Inuit in the Kugaaruk region (formerly Pelly Bay) of the Canadian Arctic. They show the incredible resourcefulness of the Netsilik (People of the Seal) who have adapted to one of the world’s harshest environments. Part 1 shows how Inuit families prepare for winter by hunting seal, birds and caribou and by fishing for Arctic Char during the extended hours of daylight.
Forgotten Warriors – November 8 • 11am-12pm
This documentary introduces us to thousands of Indigenous Canadians who enlisted and fought alongside their countrymen and women during World War II, even though they could not be conscripted. Ironically, while they fought for the freedom of others, they were being denied equality in their own country and returned home to find their land seized. Loretta Todd’s poignant film offers forth the testimony of those who were there, and how they managed to heal.
The Inconvenient Indian – November 9 • 2pm-4pm
In this time of radical change and essential re-examination, Inconvenient Indian brings to life Thomas King’s brilliant dismantling of North America’s colonial narrative, reframing this history with the powerful voices of those continuing the tradition of Indigenous resistance.
