Indigenous Education Council

The Aboriginal Educational and Training Strategy (AETS), as established by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD), is Ontario’s Aboriginal Education Strategy and was launched in January 2007 with the release of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework. Its purpose is to help close the educational gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and to increase knowledge and awareness about Indigenous histories, cultures and perspectives among all students.

The Indigenous Education Councils (IEC) were established to assist individual colleges and universities in implementing this strategy. Below is more information about their mandates and how to get involved.

Student volunteer opportunity: If any students are interested in joining the IEC as a Student Representative, please contact Eric Johnston (contact info below). There are two spaces available (preferably for one first year student and one second or third year student, but all are welcome to put their name forward). The role of the Student Representative is to attend IEC meetings for that calendar year and provide student input.
