Who is best suited for the program?

You are best suited for this program if you have an interest in preserving our cultural past and enjoy educating others about cultures, historical events, people and our natural world, are creative, observant, detail oriented, well organized, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

What are the admission requirements for the program?

English Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent with a grade of 65% or higher Applicants to AMS are strongly encouraged to visit prior to (or during) the admissions process to get a good understanding of the program. Be sure to visit us during one of the Algonquin College Open House events.

What if I already have a University degree?

If you have a university credential, you are eligible to apply for direct entry into Level 03 of the program. This is normally quite competitive with many applicants applying for a limited number of vacancies. If you are not offered direct-entry initially, you can be accepted into the regular stream and put on the wait list. If a vacancy becomes available, direct entry offers are made based on the wait list. Direct-entry applicants who have accepted spots in the regular stream are offered direct-entry spots based on the same wait list and can be easily transferred to a new stream.

What is the commitment required for this program and how much work is required?

This is a three-year program with a significant workload. Students can expect to complete two hours of preparation or study for every hour spent in class. Due to the specialized nature of the tasks, some of the work must be conducted on-site, under supervision in our well-equipped exhibition and conservation labs.

What can I do to strengthen my application?

Similar to securing a job or contract, any experience is beneficial; this may include volunteer opportunities or periods of paid work. Networking is also key. If you want to know if the museum profession is for you, arrange to speak with a museum worker or volunteer at your local museum to see what it’s all about.

What about French language courses?

There are two French courses in the AMS program of study. They are geared towards beginners but there are options to take more advanced French training. The AMS French is offered during first year but there are options for direct-entry students to take French courses at other times.
