The Algonquin College User Experience Design program prepares students to design the next generation of interactive experience through industry-driven projects that integrate AI-enabled workflows and extended reality (XR) technologies. Students apply research, systems thinking, user experience (UX) and human-computer interaction (HCI) methodologies to create innovative and data-driven digital products for immersive environments.

What is Extended Reality?

Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term that encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). Is the program focused on technology?

Yes, but technology is only one part of the program. The User Experience Design graduate certificate focuses on the relationship between people, technology, and design. Rather than concentrating solely on technology development, the program explores how technology can be designed to meet user needs, support organizational goals, and create meaningful experiences.

We explore emerging AI and XR technologies that are shaping the future of interactive experiences. Students examine the intersection of software, hardware, UX research, and HCI practices. Cybersecurity, privacy, accessibility, and inclusive design principles frame the development of ethical and socially responsible digital products.

You will graduate with an Ontario College Graduate Certificate representing that you have experience conducting research, designing and evaluating user experiences, collaborating on multidisciplinary projects, and developing technology-based products that are user-centred, ethical, accessible, and informed by evidence. You will also gain experience presenting your work professionally and building skills that support ongoing career and professional development.

What is the faculty’s background teaching in this program?

Our faculty are experienced UX and HCI professionals who work for governments agencies, research labs, high-tech companies, and design consultancies. We bring current industry practices, real-world case studies, and practical knowledge into the classroom to help students develop in-demand skills for the professional UX and HCI workplace.

What software, equipment, and technology will I need?

Students are required to provide their own laptop capable of running cloud-based applications such as Google Drive, Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Suite. Tablets and smartphones are not acceptable substitutes. No additional technology or specialized equipment is required to study in our program. All software will be available as part of your program, and you do not need to purchase any software in advance.
