There was something missing that I owed myself
Posted on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017
Despite having achieved many things in life, I felt there was something missing that I owed myself. I wanted to leave Venezuela to study in Canada but there was always an obstacle. Finally, in 2015, there were no more obstacles. My search for the perfect place to study began—a place where I could live with my husband and two-year-old son and study what I wanted. I chose Ottawa and Algonquin College based on a recommendation from a friend in Venezuela. On the college website, I was surprised by the many programs Algonquin had to offer. When I saw Brand Management I knew it was the perfect program for me. I’m a graphic designer and for a long time had been interested in becoming a brand manager.
I will not lie—I was afraid, but the people here are friendly. I quickly made friends and felt surrounded by competent people willing to teach, which encouraged me to learn and investigate more. No matter how cold it was outside, I did not want to miss a class. Were there bad days? Yes. Days of hard work? Yes, but also many days of fun with my new friends. We shared a lot in the AC Hub and in Student Commons (my favorite place in the college) and I found Ottawa perfect for me. I’m in love with this city.
A year has flown by. Now I am starting a new stage in my life. I want to start working and as soon as possible start my own company. I have more tools to achieve it—I’m trained to be a Brand Manager—and I have friends now from different corners of the world. It will not be easy to reach all my new goals, but I never give up.
