Even as an Algonquin College dental-program student in the late 2000s, Cindy Tremblay-Mercer was winning recognition for her skills. When she completed her Dental Assistant program in 2006, she received the Ottawa Dental Society award for her outstanding clinical and academic work. Three years later, after completing the College’s Dental Hygienist program, Tremblay-Mercer won the coveted Golden Scaler award – again for outstanding clinical skills. This devotion to her work remains unabated. As a hygienist at the Aqua Dental clinic in Barrhaven, Tremblay-Mercer continues to educate herself on new orthodontic treatment techniques and the most up-to-date periodontal procedures. In 2015, she graduated from Algonquin’s Restorative Dental Hygiene program. Today, a large portion of her clinical skills involve restorative work. She particularly enjoys working with children, wanting to help them regard dental experiences in a positive light. A member of the Canadian Dental Hygiene Association and the Ottawa Dental Society, Tremblay-Mercer strives to deliver the best clinical care possible while ensuring the patient’s comfort. She regards the PAC as a way to help the College maintain programs relevant to and needed by the dental profession. “These contributions (of the PAC) guide the faculty on different approaches to cover the needed curriculum,” she says.
