Ed Hansen began his journey with the landscape industry in 1988 when he founded Hansen Lawn & Gardens Ltd. With a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture, a Master of Business Administration, numerous industry-related certifications, and 30 years of experience, Hansen has made a significant impact on the industry. Not that he started out with that intention. “I got into landscaping in a kind of backward way,” says Hansen, who regularly hires the College’s Horticultural Industries’ graduates. “I started doing it as a summer job when I was a teenager and I absolutely loved it.” He still does, and it’s why he wants to give back. “It’s part of your due diligence to give back to your profession when you care about something,” says Hansen, who has served as president of the Ottawa chapter of Landscape Ontario, head of the organization’s education committee, and is a long-standing member of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association. As for his long-time role a Chair of a Program Advisory Committee, he says: “I like to hear what Algonquin thinks is changing in the industry. And from an industry perspective, we want to make sure Algonquin is producing graduates who are ready to go to work with the relevant skills.”
