Job Description
The Pembroke Public Library (PPL) blends the best of traditional library services with innovative programs, spaces, and technologies. PPL promotes a welcoming, inviting, and inclusive environment that provides excellent customer service in person, online, over the phone, and in the community.
PPL is seeking a dedicated and dependable individual for the role of Custodian.
This is a part-time position, offering 26 hours per week, involving a range of custodial responsibilities which include routine cleaning, building & equipment maintenance, groundskeeping, and other related tasks.

Daily/Weekly Duties and Responsibilities:
• Cleaning and sanitizing washrooms;
• Sweeping and wet mopping floors and stairways throughout Library;
• Vacuuming rugs and carpets throughout Library;
• Cleaning high-touch areas;
• Dusting blinds, furniture, file cabinets, desks, and windowsills;
• Refilling paper products, soaps, and cleaners throughout building;
• Polishing furniture, metal work, and chrome using appropriate cleaning/polishing compounds;
• Washing walls, windows, mirrors, and fixtures using both step and extension ladders, as needed;
• Locking/unlocking Library building, as well as arming/disarming security system;
• Overseeing the appearance and working condition of both premises and equipment;
• Gathering of waste & recycling materials, following standard waste & recycling procedures; and
• Curbside placement of garbage, recycling, and other waste items (twice-yearly, large-item collection).
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintaining a current inventory list of cleaning supplies (and reporting to CEO with list);
• Troubleshooting utility issues as they occur (blocked toilets, leaky faucets, replacement of batteries and light bulbs, etc.);
• Reporting necessary repairs, safety hazards, or conditions requiring outside contractor services to CEO;
• Utilizing hand trucks and lifting straps to load/unload supplies, recycling materials, book boxes, etc.;
• Maintaining organization and cleanliness of the Library’s outdoor storage shed;
• Maintaining organization and cleanliness of Janitorial room, indoor supplies, and equipment;
• Moving furniture (shelves, tables, chairs, desks, file cabinets, and other library furniture), as needed (assistance may be provided, if necessary);
• Keeping Library grounds free of litter at all times, and reports acts of vandalism to CEO;
• Performing related maintenance work as assigned by CEO (painting walls, refinishing furniture, and setting up tables and or/chairs for library programs); and
• Performing other duties, as assigned.
Building and grounds maintenance:
• Winter:
o Removing snow from walkways, entrances, accessibility ramp;
o Salting and sanding of walkways, entrances, and accessibility ramp prior to 9:00 am (this task may continue throughout the day, in cases of ongoing accumulation).
• Spring:
o Cleaning up of grounds (raking, sweeping debris from driveway and walkways, removing storm windows, washing windows).
• Summer:
o Trimming shrubs, raking, sweeping debris from driveway and walkways, watering plants in beds and planters.
• Autumn:
o Raking and disposing of fallen leaves on Library property (walkways and driveway);
o Washing and installing of storm windows.
Qualifications/ Requirements:
• No formal education required, but relevant experience in the care and cleaning of buildings is an asset.
• Knowledge of standard methods, safe practices, tools, and equipment of the janitorial service.
• Knowledge of the proper, safe use of cleaning supplies.
• Strong time management skills and ability to work independently.
• Ability to prioritize work-related tasks, particularly during summer/winter when extra ground maintenance is required.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform work in accordance with the provisions of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
• Ability to assist in the unloading and moving of heavy supplies.
• Ability to perform physical aspects of the job including snow shovelling, sweeping, mopping, bending, lifting, climbing a ladder, and standing for extended periods.
This opportunity includes early hours and/or shift work taking place on weekdays, weekends, and evenings. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a criminal record check for work with vulnerable sectors.
Pay Rate: $20.32 – $20.98 per hour
