Job Description
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), in the Retirement Home, shall focus on the delivery of
health care in a safe environment for all the residents. Professional nursing care shall be
provided, in accordance with the Ontario College of Nurses.
PRMIARY DUTIES:
1. Assessment of residents’ conditions, implementation of appropriate interventions and ongoing evaluation of outcomes.
2. Complete documentation per guidelines, policies and procedures.
3. Communicates to Retirement Home Manager and appropriate staff, changes in residents’
conditions.
4. Provides necessary health teaching to residents on an on-going basis.
5. Administers medications and completes treatments per shift routines. Completes
documentation for same.
6. Processes physician’s orders per policy and procedure. May take and process phone orders per company policy and procedure.
7. Completes audits and engages in continuous quality improvement activities as assigned.
8. Completes rounds with physicians. Assists when necessary, with diagnostic and therapeutic
measures, according to the Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Practical Nurses.
9. Assists with resident care and non-professional services as outlined in shift routine.
10.Supervises care and services provided to residents by non-professional staff.
11.Supervises and monitors resident meals and services
12.Conducts tours of facility for prospective residents in the absence of the Retirement Home
Manager
13.Recognizes safety hazards and promotes a safe environment for residents and staff by
following an established policy and procedure and reporting hazardous situations in a timely
fashion.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains a professional relationship with all departments, external agencies, residents,
families and volunteers.
2. Assists with orientation and staff education on request.
3. Treats all residents in a dignified manner and maintains confidential
