Steph Wheeler

Steph is an Advanced Care Paramedic with the Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service and a graduate of Algonquin College’s Primary Care Paramedic (2019) and Advanced Care Paramedic (2022) programs.

Since 2022, she has been teaching at Algonquin College across all levels of the Primary Care Paramedic program and within the Advanced Care Paramedic program. Stephanie also works as a facilitator with the Regional Paramedic Program for Eastern Ontario (RPPEO) and serves as a clinical preceptor, supporting paramedic students and new practitioners in the field.

Currently completing her Bachelor of Health Sciences at Thompson Rivers University, Stephanie focuses on developing clinical reasoning, clear communication, and confidence in practice. Her teaching approach emphasizes practical decision-making and helping learners translate complex concepts into effective patient care

Justin Jordens

Justin graduated from Algonquin College for Primary Care Paramedicine in 2021. He returned the year after to obtain his Advanced Care Paramedic Certificate as well as his Teacher & Trainer of Adults Certificate.

Prior, he obtained his Bachelors of Health Sciences from the University of Ottawa. He worked through University as a part time prosector with the Faculty of Medicine’s anatomy lab, as well as having been the campus medical first response team’s trainer.

Over the last 5 years, Justin had served Renfrew as a community care paramedic where he played a pivotal role in assisting the launch of their innovative point of care ultrasound program. More recently, Justin works as a front line paramedic in Leeds and Grenville.

Justin is always looking for ways to improve student experience through high fidelity simulation and grounded goal focused scenarios. He pays special attention to encouraging reflective practice – so as to prepare our next generation of clinicians for the continually evolving field of paramedicine.

Jacynthe Picard

Jacynthe has been a frontline Paramedic since 2010, beginning her career with Manitoulin–Sudbury EMS before returning to her hometown of Ottawa the following year to join the Ottawa Paramedic Service. Seeking to further invest in her professional growth, she returned to Algonquin College in 2014 to expand her scope of practice and earned her Advanced Care Paramedic Diploma.

Deeply committed to the advancement of the paramedic profession, Jacynthe has been actively involved in numerous workplace initiatives. Her contributions include serving as a Recruitment Ambassador for her service, co-chairing their Engagement Committee, organizing staff social events, being on an equipment test and research team, and participating as a member of the Peer Support team for five years. She also precepts Advanced Care Paramedic students and mentors new employees, consistently fostering a supportive and safe learning environment. Jacynthe is widely recognized as a positive advocate for the profession and a collaborative, engaged team member.

In 2024, Jacynthe joined the Algonquin College Paramedic program faculty, initially serving as a hospital clinical instructor before transitioning into a practical lab instructor role. Recently appointed as a full instructor for the Patient Care Lab, she is enthusiastic about this new opportunity and looks forward to further contributing to paramedic education.

Outside of her professional commitments, Jacynthe enjoys spending time with her family and nieces, camping during the summer, snowboarding in the winter, and traveling

Helen Debes

Helen (she/her) teaches in the Primary and Advanced Care Paramedic programs at Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology and is a practicing Advanced Care Paramedic with the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology, with a Minor in Chemistry, from Wilfrid Laurier University, and completed both the Primary Care Paramedic Diploma and Advanced Care Paramedic Certificate at Algonquin College. She is currently completing a Master of Health Professions Education at Queen’s University.

Helen’s teaching is informed by frontline clinical experience and focuses on preparing learners for the clinical, ethical, and relational demands of prehospital and emergency care. Grounded in values of integrity, compassion, and patient-centred practice, she emphasizes reflective practice, critical thinking, and professional accountability.

Helen is a strong advocate for equity, inclusion, and access to education, with particular attention to supporting learners from equity-denied and disenfranchised communities. Through this work, Helen aims to create learning spaces where diverse voices are centred, inequities are challenged, and learners are engaged in the collective responsibility of advancing equity and justice in healthcare. She is committed to creating safe and inclusive learning environments that foster belonging, confidence, and professional growth.

Jennifer Candow

Jennie is thrilled to be joining the Algonquin College Paramedic Program team, where she is beginning her role as the Paramedic Lab Technologist. She worked for a decade as a frontline paramedic and has supported the next generation of providers as a preceptor to many students throughout her career. She also served as an Education Facilitator with the Regional Paramedic Program of Eastern Ontario (RPPEO), where she fell in love with teaching and advancing the professional development of paramedics.

Jennie holds both a Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Master of Health Professions Education from Queen’s University. For her master’s capstone, she created a tactical first aid program, integrating evidence-based practice, stress inoculation, simulation, and human performance to enhance first responder training. Her professional interests include simulation-based learning, paramedic research, program development, and interprofessional training that fosters collaboration across emergency services. She is also a Tactical Medical Instructor for various law enforcement agencies.

Jennie is excited to be part of paramedic education at Algonquin College. She hopes to contribute not only in the lab but also as an occasional instructor in the coming year. Her mantra is that “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training,” which makes the work we do in our program all the more important. Jennie is committed to fostering a culture of kindness, recognizing it as foundational to both learning and practice.

Outside of work, Jennie enjoys spending time with family and is happiest in the woods, preferably with coffee and her dog.

Jun Steele

After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Coaching Science (Exercise Science) and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Jun undertook an Honour’s year to study and research the effects of eccentric exercise in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Jun developed a strong interest and passion in the area of Exercise Physiology and went on to complete his Master’s degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation. He later ran his own clinical Exercise Physiology practice and held various teaching and clinical positions at the University of Canberra and the Canberra Institute of Technology.

In addition to continuing his Exercise Physiology practice, Jun is now pursuing a career in Paramedicine. Jun completed a Bachelor’s degree in Paramedicine in 2021 at Griffith University, Australia. Jun is currently furthering his studies and completing his Advanced Care Paramedic program at Algonquin College. He now works as a proud paramedic for the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service in Ontario. Jun also works at Algonquin College within the Paramedic Faculty as a professor.

Natalie Lavergne

Throughout her career, Natalie has been involved in didactic, clinical, and preceptorship delivery at PCP, ACP, and CCP levels of care. Natalie has been working for the air ambulance since 2001, received her Critical Care Paramedic level in 2003 and completed additional training in pediatric critical care in 2009. Natalie holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Ottawa University and is currently working as a Critical Care Paramedic and Field Educator for Ornge, an Education Facilitator for RPPEO, and an Instructor for the Paramedic and Advanced Care Paramedic programs at Algonquin College.

Sara MacGregor

Sara holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Neuroscience and Mental Health from Carleton University. Throughout this time, Sara focused on bereavement support in pediatric palliative care at The Roger Neilson House, as well as post-anesthetic care in the Surgical Unit at The Ottawa Hospital.

Sara also comes from a background of health and fitness with over 10 years of experience in personal training, as well as competitive weightlifting. With her experience and passion for coaching, she plays an active role in teaching others about health and wellness.

She received her Primary Care and Advanced Care Paramedic diploma from Algonquin College and is a proud employee of the Ottawa Paramedic Service. Sara is committed to helping others succeed, and is active in the student precepting process as well as mentoring new employees.

Since 2017, Sara has had the privilege of fulfilling many roles within the Primary Care Paramedic Program focusing on fitness, practical, and theoretical knowledge. She truly enjoys being a part of the world of education and strives to promote a safe and supportive learning environment

Tyler Leslie

Tyler has filled various roles at Algonquin College since 2010, most recently as the Field Placement Officer for both the Paramedic and Advanced Care Paramedic Programs. He works closely with local Paramedic Services, hospitals, and healthcare organizations to facilitate the most progressive field learning experience possible.

Tyler holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from Thompson Rivers University. He is a 2008 graduate of the Algonquin College Paramedic Program. Tyler completed the Advanced Care Paramedic Program, also at Algonquin College, in 2011.

Since 2008, Tyler has been a proud member of the Ottawa Paramedic Service (OPS), currently holding the rank of Operations Superintendent. He spent most of his career in Special Operations as a member and Team Leader of the Paramedic Support Unit. There, he worked as the lead medical instructor for multiple specialty units of local, provincial, and national policing agencies.

Tyler has received several awards and honors including; Algonquin College Part-Time Support Staff Award (in recognition of excellence supporting the success of students, colleagues, and clients) and the City Managers Award of Distinction in the field of innovation (the highest distinction possible for City of Ottawa employees). Tyler has an interest in innovative paramedic programming and believes strongly in education-based industry advancement.

Tyler is an avid outdoorsman, spending his spare time snowboarding, hunting, backcountry canoeing and camping with friends and family.
