Police & Public Safety Institute

The Police and Public Safety Institute (PPSI) is for individuals seeking to serve their communities through meaningful careers in public safety. The programs offered in PPSI help students develop essential skills, gain experience and prepare for careers in victimology, community and justice services, paramedicine, firefighting, policing and community safety. Through hands-on learning such as role play, scenario-based training, simulations, and applied practice, students build practical competence in realistic settings. Emergency services programs also provide access to specialized labs, vehicles, and equipment that mirror real-world environments, enhancing technical training and readiness.

Students learn from experienced industry professionals, many of whom remain active in their fields, bringing current knowledge and expertise directly into the classroom. Strong community partnerships and a range of experiential learning opportunities, which may include outreach initiatives, practicums, preceptorships, placements, co-op and applied research allow students to further strengthen their skills, decision-making, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Through these experiences, students are prepared to meet the demands of public safety work and make a lasting impact when it matters most.

Beyond technical skills, students build strong community connections through outreach initiatives focused on fire prevention, public safety education, fundraising, and local volunteer events preparing them to serve with confidence both on and off the job.

Hands-On Experiences

Paramedic Program Completes Campus Walkabout

The paramedic program gained hands-on experience in their recent annual campus walkabout, led by Ashley Murfin, Program Coordinator, Paramedic. The exercise teaches students how to safely navigate indoor and outdoor terrain, ensuring paramedics keep their patients safe during transport.
