Beverley HaslegravePhysical Resources

As part of the Physical Resources Team, Horticulturalist Beverley Haslegrave helps keep the College looking its best (and that team is doing a phenomenal job, might I add!). But it’s for her work with a group of visitors who camped out at the College through the month of June that I wish to nominate her for a President’s Star Award.

A mother duck came to nest in the C Building Courtyard in late May and, shortly thereafter, hatched 8 eggs. While not an entirely uncommon occurrence, steps had to be taken to ensure safety of the ducks, the students, and the faculty. Beverley and her team made the courtyard more comfortable for the ducks by creating an artificial pond, running the sprinklers to bring up the worms so there would be food for the ducks to eat, and setting up a fence and warning signs to keep human intruders away. She also helped keep the College community, including us here in the Public Relations and Communications Department, well informed about the situation.

The inspiration to nominate Beverley for a President’s Star Award came the morning of June 26th when, after nearly a month of playing host to the ducks, the mother finally said enough and led her ducklings out of the College through four buildings on a long and winding route that eventually led the ducklings off College grounds. Beverley was able to not only keep the path clear through the school and out to the park located to the south of the school, but she also snapped several priceless pictures of the mother and her ducklings along their walk, and updated the Communications team as soon as the ducks had safely left the property.

Thank you Beverley for your tireless work!
