Online Memorial: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, marks the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montreal in 1989. They died because they were women.

Become an ally by:

Listening: Be open to learning from the experiences of others.

Believing: Support survivors and those affected by violence.

Speaking out: Add your voice to call out violence.

Intervening: Find a safe way to help when you see acts of gender-based violence.

Acting: Give your time to organizations working to end violence.

In the lead up to December 6, Algonquin College learners and employees are encouraged to write messages of support or remembrance for all those affected by gendered violence, so we as a society can strive for a world without violence and oppression.

For this online memorial, please take a moment to answer the question, “How do you hope to create a world without gendered violence?”

Project Lighthouse will use these messages to create poetry art. Fifty participants will be chosen to receive a small token* of thanks from Project Lighthouse for contributing their messages, in the hopes of encouraging everyone to further the conversation in their own circles.

*Please note, everyone is welcome to add their message of support, but the item from Project Lighthouse can only be shipped within Canada.
