Use of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs)

Algonquin College receives regular requests to operate drones for facilities work, filming, inspections, academic use, and media activities.

Key Message

  • Drone use on College property is restricted and subject to approval.
  • Compliance with Transport Canada regulations does not automatically permit drone operations on campus.

What We Consider

Drone requests are assessed based on:

  • Campus location (Ottawa campus is near controlled airspace)
  • Drone size and capability
  • Operator qualifications
  • Proximity to students, residences, daycare facilities, and public roads
  • Insurance and liability exposure
  • Purpose of the activity

Transport Canada Categories (High‑Level)

  • Micro drones (<250 g): Fewer federal requirements, but must still be flown safely.
  • Small drones (250 g – 25 kg): Pilot certification and additional rules apply.
  • Large drones (>25 kg): Special authorization required.

College‑Specific Expectations

Even where Transport Canada permits an operation, the College may:

  • Restrict locations or times
  • Prohibit flight near sensitive areas
  • Require insurance documentation
  • Require supervision or additional controls
  • Deny requests entirely

What Is Generally Not Supported

  • Recreational or casual drone use
  • Student‑operated drones without formal approval
  • Flights over people or near residences
  • Operations that interfere with campus safety or security

How to Request Approval

Please submit a Request to Operate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV- Drone) Form well in advance of the proposed activity, and send to the Risk Manager.
