Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW)

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness. MIAW takes place October 1 -7, with Algonquin College’s programming running October 2-6.

Monday, October 2

Lunchtime Yoga (12:05pm-12:50pm): Taking care of your mental and physical health is essential during this time. To help ease some stress and anxiety, join this free yoga session. Open to students and employees. Attend virtually or in the Spiritual Centre (Room E211, 2nd Floor, Student Commons).

Snack Chats (2:00pm-3:00pm): Enjoy some yummy snacks while chatting with our trained student peers in the Student Health & Wellness Zone (3rd Floor, Student Commons).

AC Mood Walks (2:00pm-3:30pm): Join Counselling Services for a Mood Walk, rain or shine! Mood Walks are a great opportunity to explore your community, meet new friends, and walk your way to greater wellness.

Tuesday, October 3

AC Purple Couch (10:30am-12:30pm): Visit Nawapon (1st Floor, Student Commons) to grab a seat on the AC Purple Couch and speak your mind. Chat with the person beside you, trained student leaders, or mental health professionals.

Health Promotion Drop-in (11:00am-2:00pm): Stop by and say hi to our Health Promoters! They will be set up in the ACCE Walkway (between B Building and ACCE Building) with mental health resources and swag!

Wednesday, October 4

Health Promotion Drop-in (12:00pm-3:00pm): Stop by and say hi to our Health Promoters! They will be set up on the second floor link between J and N Building with mental health resources and swag!

Time for You! Self-care (12:00pm-1:00pm): Join Health Promotion and Counselling Services in the Student Health & Wellness Zone to learn and practice self-care. This week’s theme is mindfulness!

Wellness Wednesday (1:00pm-2:00pm): Join the Health Promotion team on the 3rd floor of Student Commons to learn about the mental health resources available to you.

Sisters in Spirit (2:30pm-4:00pm): Join Project Lighthouse and the Mamidosewin Centre in the AC Hub on for a talk by Roberta Della-Pica of Lake Clear, Algonquin Territory,

Thursday, October 5

Phototherapy: Connecting through Perspective (11:00am-1:00pm): Attend this virtual counselling group to discuss topics related to mental health, share coping strategies, nurture creativity, deepen connections, and learn new photography tips.

Health Promotion Drop-in (11:00am-2:00pm): Stop by and say hi to our Health Promoters! They will be set up in front of Savior Fare (H Building) with mental health resources and swag!

Health Spots (12:00pm-2:00pm):Have questions about Health Services and what services are offered? Drop by Health Spots to get all of your questions answered.

Glitter & Gab (1:00pm-2:00pm): Create glittery crafts while shining a light on various topics around sexuality and mental health in the Student Health & Wellness Zone (3rd Floor, Student Commons).

Lattes and Laughter (2:00pm-3:00pm): Sip some lattes while diving into some exciting conversations about health, sexuality, wellness, and more, in the Student Health & Wellness Zone (3rd Floor, Student Commons).

Friday, October 6

Snack Chats (11:00am-12:00pm): Enjoy some yummy snacks while chatting with our trained student peers in the Student Health & Wellness Zone (3rd Floor, Student Commons).
