Learning Through Community: CYC Students Build Connections at the Amazing Youth Worker Race

Twelve second-year Child and Youth Care (CYC) students recently hit the streets of Ottawa for the Amazing Youth Worker Race, a community-wide event that brings together youth-serving professionals for a day of teamwork, learning, and connection.

Working in teams, participants traveled across the city completing challenges while discovering the organizations and services that support youth in our community. The experience gave students a chance to expand their professional networks and learn firsthand about the many resources available to young people and their families.

Our students made an impressive showing, with one team finishing 8th out of 21 teams – the highest placement ever achieved by an Algonquin College team.

The Amazing Youth Worker Race, which began in 2015, helps strengthen connections across the youth-serving sector while encouraging collaboration and learning beyond the classroom. Child and Youth Care professors Andie Fournier and Mike Black have been involved with the organizing committee since the event’s inception.

From the challenges and community connections to the food, prizes, and team spirit, the day was a memorable experience for everyone involved.
