Do you have to be really fit to get into the program?
A high degree of physical fitness is not required; however, to be credible as a fitness and health professional it is important to be able to demonstrate exercises and to live the lifestyle that you’re recommending to others.
What is the best preparation for this program?
Students taking the Exercise Science or Healthy Lifestyles courses in high school are well prepared for the first semester of our program. These courses generally give a good introduction to the Anatomy and Physiology courses that are important in our program. High school biology, physics and chemistry also provide helpful foundational knowledge.
How is this program delivered?
For our September intake, students follow a traditional fall/winter/fall/winter delivery. For our January intake students follow 4 consecutive semesters to complete the program without a semester break.
As certifications are not built into the program, once you graduate are there certifications you can complete?
When you have completed your diploma, you are eligible for the CSEP-CPT (Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology – Certified Personal Trainer) certification. Other certifications in personal training, group fitness and coaching with various organizations in the industry are also available to you either during your studies or after graduation.
What are the field placement opportunities available to you in the program?
Placements are offered in a variety of both public and private fitness centers. From organizations like the City of Ottawa to larger fitness facilities (YMCA), senior’s homes and sports training facilities. There are also opportunities in physiotherapy clinics, which can complement those who want to explore a therapy setting.
After graduation, what programs at Algonquin College offer advanced standing?
Graduates of the program can enter Level 3 of the Recreation and Leisure Services program with advanced standing. Opportunities in the other wellness programs are also available with exemptions in some courses.
Could you go on to university after completing this program and get credit for your time at Algonquin College?
Yes. Many universities will recognize credits from our program towards kinesiology and other exercise science-related degrees. Each university has slightly different requirements and minimum grades are required. For more info visit pathways
What kind of jobs are available once you graduate?
There are many different types of jobs available, including but not limited to personal training or group fitness instruction. These jobs can be part-time or full-time and in public or private settings where fitness and wellness education is a priority. Reviewing the types of placement settings can give you a great idea of the types of places you may be able to seek employment.
