Student Experience

Combine theoretical and practical skills

The Social Service Worker program at Algonquin College provides students with field placement opportunities in a variety of settings, which enables students to choose the area of interest they would like to pursue in the future. Students will have ample time in placement to develop their skills, network and help advance their career as the program has the highest placement hours in the province. Once the student has completed the program, they are eligible to become registered as a SSW through the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Students also learn practical skills through role playing, case studies, and interviewing exercises with peers and community members.

Catherine Coleman, Student, Social Service Worker

“I entered the Social Service Worker program as a mature student with a degree in Psychology, and the hopes of gaining valuable work experience in the field, while also adding to my existing education. I was nervous about starting back at school but from the moment I entered the program I knew I was in the right place. The faculty have been incredibly supportive with the goal of ensuring I not only succeed when I am able to start into the workforce, but also making sure that I have a holistic and comprehensive understanding of the theories and skills needed to excel. I feel completely confident that I have been provided with the tools I need to be successful. I have had my thoughts and beliefs challenged by professors in this program and I appreciate the passion that the faculty bring to my studies.
During my diploma program I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in amazing placements and will take the lessons I learned at both of them to help me grow both professionally and personally. It is safe to say that I will leave this program a different person – in the best way possible. ”

“The Social Service Worker Program and Faculty have changed my life, forever. The professors enrich our learning with years of lived experience, while continuing to bring a fresh perspective of the field to the classroom. After completing my first year of the program, I was able to secure a job in the Mental Health field that continues to provide incredible opportunities in collaboration with my in-class learning. The opportunities this program has provided me have gone beyond my wildest dreams, and I feel honoured to be a part of this special group of learners. Throughout this journey I have built relationships with my classmates that I will hold with me for the rest of my life. As a learner, I am supported, encouraged, and provided all the tools I need to succeed. As excited as I am to graduate and flourish in the field of Social Service Work, I continue to wake up every day excited to learn.”
