Overview

To work on residential, commercial or industrial gas-fired equipment, you must first attain certification by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). In this program that was designed in conjunction with the TSSA curriculum standards and approved by the TSSA, students learn to install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service, or remove a natural gas or propane appliance with an input of 400,000 British Thermal Units per Hour (BTUH) or less, as well as the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

To qualify for this College Approved Certificate, you must complete the program within two years.

Description

Possessing a thorough understanding of electrical concepts is crucial for gas technicians. Building on knowledge in the area of basic electricity, students use a blend of theory and practical experience to troubleshoot, install and service electrical systems and components critical to gas-fired equipment.

Description

Knowledge and safe, practical use of piping/tubing, meters and regulators are essential requirements for all gas technicians within industry. Building on previous study, students further develop skills and knowledge in the design and installation of piping and tubing systems, as well as introducing meters and regulators and their application, installation and maintenance in a piping system. The building as a system is studied to lay the foundation of how building and gas fired appliances interact and affect each other's operation.

HRA0028 - Air Handlers, Conversion Burners & Building Systems (2G)

Description

Forming the foundation for the gas technician is the ability to remove oil burner systems and replace them with gas conversion burner systems. Students identify and describe different conversion burners, air handling equipment and controls, and discuss the concepts of combustion efficiency. Students observe an oil-to-gas conversion, and how to wire and troubleshoot conversion burners/controls.

Description

Knowledge and use of basic controls for gas-fired equipment is essential for heating/cooling control, safety and energy efficiency. Building on previous study, students develop troubleshooting capabilities while gaining the understanding of the control systems critical to gas-fired equipment. Students describe and identify controls in gas fired systems, identify the action of the control and troubleshoot controls. Students also assess defective controls and demonstrate how to repair or replace them.

Description

Building on previous study, students apply knowledge of gas systems to explain, describe and name the distinctive components of gas-fired domestic appliances, refrigerators, decorative appliances and space heaters. In the practical component, students apply knowledge regarding the installation and servicing of these gas-fired appliances.

Description

Building on previous knowledge, students identify, describe, and assess different furnace systems and add-on devices such as: electronic air cleaners, Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV), and humidifiers. In the practical component, students apply appropriate codes and manufacturers' instructions to service and install different furnace systems and add-on devices.

Description

Many types of heating systems exist, including those which utilize water or other types of liquids. Students develop the ability to identify and recognize gas fired boilers, water heaters, hydronic controls and combination heating systems. Students classify and describe boilers and zone controls. Students activate and troubleshoot a hydronic heating system, as well as various water heaters.

HRA0025 - Venting Practices for Appliances (2D)

Description

Venting practices for all gas-fired equipment is crucial for the safe removal of flue products (products of combustion). Students learn about heat transfer, combustion efficiency and the role proper venting and air supply requirements play in the safe and efficient operation of gas-fired appliances. Students identify, develop, design and size venting systems utilizing various venting materials and components in accordance with venting requirements and applicable codes.

Careers

Upon successfully completing all the program requirements, students may write the TSSA exam within a year of completing their last course. Once successful, they will receive the TSSA Certificate of Qualification for Gas Technician 2, which will qualify graduates to work unsupervised to install, repair, maintain and inspect gaseous fuel pipelines and appliances in homes and industrial or commercial buildings. Graduates typically work with gas utility and gas servicing companies; plumbing, heating and air conditioning; and mechanical/construction firms. Graduates may also pursue self-employment.

Graduation Fee
Once you have completed all the courses in the program, it is the responsibility of the student to complete a certificate/diploma application (https://www.algonquincollege.com/online/certificationgraduating/). A graduation fee of $22 will be charged when the application is submitted. When your certificate/diploma application has been approved, you will be invited to Spring or Fall Convocation.

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must satisfy both College Eligibility and Program Eligibility requirements.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without an OSSD).

Program Resources

Students are expected to bring and wear CSA-approved footwear and eye protection in the labs at all times.

Students are required to maintain a minimum grade of 75% in the practical component of the program to meet TSSA requirements. After successful completion of the eight courses in the program, students have one calendar year to take the TSSA Certification Exam, on which they must achieve 75% or higher in order to receive the TSSA Certificate of Qualification, which is the requirement to work in the industry.

Students who chose to write the TSSA exam will need to complete an application form, register and pay the applicable fee prior to writing the exam. This can be arranged through Algonquin College and information will be provided as students finish their program.
