Tech to Help Seniors

Arvindkumar Chavda, a second-year robotics student, holds an alarm that will call for help when a senior falls. His research team created the system for Ottawa start-up Zamani Wireless Solutions.

The smartphone-sized circuit board doesn’t look like much, but one day it could help fallen seniors get back on their feet. Since November a team of international students has been building the alarm portion for a new fall-detection system for seniors created by Ottawa start-up Zamani Wireless Systems. “This project can actually save your life,” said Arvindkumar Chavda, a second-year electro-mechanical engineering technician-robotics student.

Algonquin College Construction Research Centre receives $2.3m over five years

The Honourable Minister of State (Science and Technology), Ed Holder, joined by David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale, today announced over $40 million in grants to colleges across Canada to support applied research and development activities with industry, including $2.3 million over five years for Algonquin College’s Construction Research Centre.

An momentous day for the office of Applied Research as we all welcome the official launch of Algonquin College’s Construction Research Centre. The hope is this new centre will attract clients for the College’s Office of Applied Research & Innovation while also providing students and graduates with access to cutting edge equipment.
