Working Outside of Canada

Are you interested in completing your co-op work term outside of Canada? There are a few important steps you need to take to ensure you’re ready to travel and work abroad. These steps are necessary to complete the proper protocol for traveling/working abroad per Policy AA 44 – International Travel and Safety – Students, and allowing the Co-op Department enough time to review and validate the Co-op work experience, contact your prospective employer, and register you for your work term.

Remote Co-op options: Top left - Move outside of Canada to complete your co-op in that country. Bottom left - Remain in Canada and complete your co-op remotely for an employer OUTSIDE of Canada. Top right - Move outside of Canada to complete your co-op remotely for an employer IN Canada. Bottom right - Move outside of Canada to complete your co-op for a company that's in a different country than where you’ll be living.

Students who want to work for an organization outside of Canada must do the following 60 days before the beginning of the work term. Please review the Important Co-op Dates for the deadline:

  1. Declare Co-op work term details by completing the Confirmation of Co-op Work Term Form.
  2. Complete the Approval Risk Assessment for International Travel Involving Students form and submit it to the Co-op Department.
  3. Complete the Informed Student Consent and Waiver and submit to the Co-op Department.
  4. Register your travel with the International Education Centre.

Co-op work terms outside of Canada must meet all Co-op Work Term Requirements. Co-op supervisors must be able to communicate by phone, email and virtual conferencing in English with the Co-op Department and must complete the Employer Check-In, Employer Check Out, and Work Term Employer Evaluation in English.

According to Policy AA 44 – International Travel and Safety – Students, the College will not approve travel for students to destinations where the Government of Canada’s travel risk levels include “Avoid non-essential travel” (Level 3) or “Avoid all travel” (Level 4). This policy is in place to mitigate the risk associated with students engaging in College activities (including Co-op Work Terms) abroad.

Important:

If you are an international student intending on traveling back to your home country for co-op work, you still need to follow the above-mentioned steps and register your travel with the International Education Centre 60 days before departure/beginning of the work term.
