General Tips & Considerations

  • Ensure you have a suitably confidential and private space where you will not be interrupted, and your conversation will not be overheard.
  • Ensure you will be free from distractions during your appointment.
  • In case of tech issues, the Counsellor will contact you via an alternate method (phone or email).
  • If you feel something has been misunderstood, please mention it to the Counsellor.
  • Recording sessions is not permitted; the Counsellor will be pleased to answer any questions about this.

Phone Info

  • The Counsellor will call you from a number that will be blocked. Please make sure your phone can take calls from blocked numbers.

Videoconferencing Info

  • Your Counsellor will send you a Zoom invite via your Algonquin e-mail. If you have questions about how to use Zoom, please contact the Welcome Centre.
  • Use the biggest screen size available to you (i.e. a laptop rather than a phone if you can). Make sure that the device is stable and the camera is level with your eyes. It helps if you are in a well-lit area with no bright light directly behind you.
  • Remember that it can be hard to make eye contact on video.

During your first appointment, the Counsellor will:

  • Confirm your contact info and current location.
  • Review the Privacy of Information

Our Team

The team at Counselling Services consists of experienced and certified Masters-level Counsellors, who are all members of either the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. The team provides academic, career, and mental health counselling to students at the Ottawa campus. Counsellors also support college-wide events promoting mental health and harm reduction, and provide a range of workshops and training to Algonquin College students and staff throughout the year.
