Vision

At Algonquin College, our focus on creating learner-driven, personalized learning experiences corresponds with a teaching approach that embraces active learning.

Renovations of our informal learning spaces over the past few years have transformed the student learning experience on campus. Students have access to flexible learning space options on campus where they can collaborate as groups, connect with technology, and study independently.

Now, we have an opportunity to physically manifest the College’s vision for flexible, student-centred learning within our formal classrooms.

Our vision is to support flexible learning options and active learning practices across all classroom types at Algonquin.

Active Learning Classroom Strategy

The goal of the Active Learning Classroom Strategy initiative is to incrementally evolve our formal learning spaces and offer classroom types that supports active learning activities – from interactive lecture to collaborative group interaction.

To support the strategy, a set of Classroom Design Principles was prepared based on student/faculty input and research into classroom design in higher education.

rocess - 1) Faculty and Student Feedback 2) Active Learning Classroom Framework (Design Principles) 3) Active Learning Classroom Strategy (Guide Re-Design of Classrooms)

The principles were vetted by various committees including:

    • Classroom Working Group
    • College Space Committee
    • Teaching and Learning Advisory Group

Classroom Standards

A set of Classroom Design Standards have been developed, in consultation with the Classroom Working Group, to guide classroom renovation decision making.
