Algonquin College launches free training program for women new to Canada

OTTAWA (June 26, 2023) – Algonquin College is announcing a free training program for women newcomers to Canada. The Skills for Success program is open to new Canadians seeking to upgrade their skills for entry level office administration roles. Participants must reside within the National Capital Region, hold a valid SIN and have emigrated to Canada within the last five years.

Supported through funding provided by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the pilot program offers entry dates in Fall 2023 and Winter 2024. Up to 50 students per session will attend 20 hours of training per week for 11 weeks at Algonquin College’s Ottawa Campus, where they will learn skills in communication, math and digital technology. Program graduates will be well prepared for an administrative career in customer service, data-entry, human resources and accounting.

“We are delighted to announce the Skills for Success program, providing free essential skills training for women newcomers to Canada,” said Alana Anderson, Chair, Academic Access Centre and General Arts and Science, Algonquin College. “This program will help meet the demand for various administrative skillsets in the Ottawa region, increasing the chances of success for our graduates.”

Project partner, Ottawa-based staffing firm Altis Recruitment will screen and select Skills for Success participants, as well as provide guidance on resume building, interviewing and networking. Graduates will leave the program with an Altis profile and will be kept informed of new entry level office administration opportunities.

Skills for Success is administered through the Academic Access Centre (AAC) at Algonquin College, which provides various education services through Academic Upgrading courses. The AAC provides programs for students to earn the ACE Certificate (a Grade 12 equivalency in a college environment) or elevate their skills in English, math, sciences and computer literacy before pursuing postsecondary education or employment. The AAC also offers a specialized program for students interested in Algonquin College health science programs.

Applications for Skills for Success are currently open for the September 2023 and January 2024 intakes. Those who are interested in applying may do so on the Academic Access Centre website or contact aac@algonquincollege.com for more information.
