PEMROKE, ON (Apr. 9, 2026) –Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus has earned ENERGY STAR® certification from Natural Resources Canada, becoming the first college in Canada to receive this respected designation for superior energy performance.

The certification recognizes buildings that meet strict energy efficiency standards and perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide. This milestone underscores the Pembroke Campus’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and environmental leadership.

Algonquin College Launches AI Accelerator Hub in Collaboration with AWS Canada

New Applied Research service offering brings together technology, people and process to enhance the adoption of AI.

OTTAWA, ON (May 27, 2025) – Today, Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, the largest polytechnic institute in Eastern Ontario, announced the establishment of the AI Accelerator Hub (AAH) to provide companies and community organizations with targeted service offerings to accelerate adoption of Cloud and AI technologies. The AI Accelerator Hub at Algonquin College brings together existing Applied Research programs at the institution, but layers in industry-leading cloud computing resources and training to impact productivity for local organizations. The Hub, powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), will augment collaborative research projects for industry and community clients across a range of disciplines.

Bringing innovation to life: over 120 student projects featured at Algonquin College’s Applied Research Day

The largest iteration of Algonquin College’s Applied Research Day occurred on April 11, with over 120 innovative student research projects presented under the theme Innovate, Impact, Inspire.

The event celebrated the culmination of months of dedicated work by talented learners and faculty, who collaborated on cutting-edge projects to address real-world challenges faced by industry, government, and community partners across diverse fields, including Computer Programming, Interactive Media Design, Mobile Application Development, and Engineering. Additionally, the event featured eight faculty-led projects from the Research Development Institute (RDI) at Algonquin College.

Algonquin College’s Social Innovation Lab Receives $400,000 Through the Embark Student Foundation Major Grant Program

OTTAWA (Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025) – In an effort to address the challenge of youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET), the Embark Student Foundation has awarded $400,000 to support the Social Innovation Lab at Algonquin College. This grant will fund the Transdisciplinary Approach to Service Transformation in NEET (TASTE), a long-term initiative to design, pilot, and evaluate innovative approaches to reactivate NEET youth to education.

Algonquin College receives research grant to support survivors of intimate partner violence

OTTAWA (Dec. 18, 2023) – Algonquin College has received a $358,508 grant to further collaborative research supporting survivors of intimate partner violence. As part of the College and Community Innovation (CCI) program grants issued by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), this funding will strengthen collaborative research between Canadian colleges and partners from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of our exciting new project, Applying Concussion Recovery Technology to Support Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, at Algonquin College,” said Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Algonquin College. “This project not only offers invaluable experiential learning opportunities for our students but also addresses a critical community need. We extend our gratitude to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research grant for recognizing and supporting the significance of this initiative.”

Algonquin College hosts student research showcase

OTTAWA (Dec. 4, 2023) – The Office of Applied Research at Algonquin College is hosting the RE/ACTION In-Class Projects Showcase on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This edition of RE/ACTION has a special focus on public health, with over 50 student teams displaying projects on topics ranging from improving health care in Indigenous communities, increasing public awareness on the benefits of influenza immunization, drafting non-stigmatizing terminology in medical and nursing documentation related to substance use health, and creating activities for residents at The Oaks, a managed alcohol program in Ottawa. Student research showcase coming to Algonquin College

OTTAWA (Aug. 2, 2023) – The Office of Applied Research at Algonquin College is hosting an In-Class Projects Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At the event, students will exhibit forward-looking research and technology projects produced in collaboration with industry, institutional and community partners, providing a glimpse into the future of technology and the current state of innovation. Ranging from robotics to artificial intelligence, fundraising to civic engagement, the projects students work on are incredibly diverse.

Judges from local employer partners, including Natural Resources Canada, Ingenium and the Kanata North Business Association will be in attendance to discuss project details with the student-led teams.

Algonquin College Ranks Third in Canada for Research Partnerships in 2022

OTTAWA (Jan. 25, 2023) – Research Infosource Inc. released its annual ranking today for Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in 2022. Algonquin College is proud to announce it ranks third in the category of research partnerships with 168 partnerships and second in completed research projects with 155 projects.

“We are thrilled to see Algonquin College recognized as a leader in research partnerships amongst colleges in Canada,” said Claude Brulé, Algonquin College President and CEO. “Our commitment to applied research and innovation, as well as working closely with industry partners and community organizations, has resulted in this outstanding achievement.”

In addition to the research partnership results, Algonquin College ranked second in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) research income with $662,000 and ninth in Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) research income with $2,528,000. Algonquin College Launching Research Development Institute

$1.5 million over Five Years from NSERC Mobilize Program

Today, Algonquin College is pleased to announce that it has received $1.5 million in funding to establish a Research and Development Institute (RDI), thanks to funding received by The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

The RDI will serve a dual purpose:

(1) To support highly strategic applied research projects in collaboration with industry and community partners (an estimated five projects per year).

(2) To grow applied research capacity within the College.

“The RDI will support special, collaborative applied research projects that have strategic

importance to the College and community,” said Claude Brulé, President and CEO, Algonquin College. “The projects will reside in the College’s existing domains of research excellence, and they will address issues of national importance, working with local and community partners. Topics include supply chain innovation, tools for online learning, intimate partner violence, wastewater for rural development and reduction of carbon footprint in biogas generation.”
