Algonquin College Graduates Move from Classroom to Career

OTTAWA, ON (June 23, 2026) — For many Algonquin College graduates, the journey from learning to earning begins before they cross the convocation stage. As the College celebrates its 2026 graduates, it is also recognizing the growing number of learners who are entering convocation already connected to employers, launched into careers and ready to contribute to their professions and communities.

Among them is Md Irteza Chowdhury, who is graduating from the Business Intelligence System Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence Software Development programs. While studying, Chowdhury found full-time employment with the Public Health Agency of Canada in the Health Portfolio Operations Centre after a four-month co-op placement.

“It feels amazing. The job market is very competitive…so when [I] got the job, it [felt] like everything is true about Algonquin,” said Chowdhury.

Algonquin College honours General Jennie Carignan with honorary degree

OTTAWA, ON (June 24, 2026) — Today, Algonquin College conferred an honorary degree upon General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces, during its 2026 Convocation ceremony.

The honorary degree recognizes General Carignan’s distinguished career of service and leadership, as well as her longstanding commitment to lifelong learning. Addressing graduates, she reflected on lessons drawn from a career spent leading through complexity and change, encouraging members of the Class of 2026 to remain curious, persevere through challenges, and embrace opportunities for growth throughout their lives.

“Success is always incremental. It’s steps forward and steps backward. Bit by bit. It’s learning, growing, and adapting,” said General Carignan in her address. “It’s pushing your limits, raising your bar, and seeing what you’re made of. So don’t be afraid to try. Don’t be afraid to try again. And don’t be afraid to fail. Sometimes the best bridges are the non-standard ones.”

Algonquin College marks National Indigenous History Month with new initiatives advancing Truth and Reconciliation

June 24, 2026 Ottawa, ON — Algonquin College is marking Canada’s National Indigenous History Month by highlighting progress made over the last year in advancing its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation.

Since the release of its 10-Year Report on Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action in June 2025, the College has expanded community partnerships, strengthened Indigenous language revitalization efforts, created new Indigenous spaces on campus, integrated Indigenous ways of knowing into hiring practices, and launched a two-year Indigenous Studies diploma. The College also introduced Nìgàn, a major new initiative designed to guide and accelerate reconciliation-focused work with community partners, and the Indigenous Knowledge, Work, and Entrepreneurship (IKWE) program to support and empower Indigenous students. Algonquin College welcomes CAE as newest Nìgàn partner to advance student access and community engagement

Ottawa, ON (Monday, June 22, 2026) – This National Indigenous History Month, Algonquin College is proud to announce that CAE is the newest partner of the recently rebranded Nìgàn initiative (formerly known as DARE6). Through this collaboration, CAE will financially support student success, strengthen community partnerships, and contribute to ongoing efforts toward Truth and Reconciliation in our region and beyond.

First established in 2020 as DARE6, Nìgàn is a collaboration that brings together Algonquin College and community partners to build meaningful relationships grounded in learning, respect, and shared responsibility. Partners are invited to become part of the college community and experience relationship building, working in circle, and learning about Indigenization and reconciliation. Nìgàn also facilitates experiences that can help partners shape or create change within their own organizations.

OTTAWA (June 22, 2026) — From June 23-26 the Canadian Tire Centre will be filled with celebration, excitement, and pride as more than 12,000 eligible Algonquin College graduates take part in 2026 Convocation ceremonies.

Algonquin College expands support for Indigenous women thanks to CFUW-Ottawa’s gift in memory of Savanna Pikuyak

Ottawa, ON (June 11, 2026) – Algonquin College is pleased to announce that CFUW-Ottawa has donated $25,000 to establish a new bursary in memory of Savanna Pikuyak, a young Inuk woman and Algonquin College student whose tragic death in 2022 deeply affected our community.

The CFUW-Ottawa Savanna Pikuyak Memorial Bursary awards $5,000 each year to an Indigenous student who identifies as a woman and is enrolled in Practical Nursing, Pre-Health Sciences, or the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours). The bursary’s main goal is to financially support Indigenous students so they can overcome financial barriers and find safe housing in Ottawa. First preference will be given to students who, like Savanna, come from northern communities in Canada.

Honouring a lifetime of service in health care

At this year’s Algonquin College convocation, Leah Levesque will walk across the stage to receive an honorary degree, a moment that reflectsHeadshot and text of honorary degree recipient Leah Levesque a career spent shaping the health care system many graduates are about to enter. Over decades, she has led teams, built partnerships, innovated and created opportunities for others. The recognition is fitting, not just for what she has accomplished, but how she has achieved it: with a steady focus on people and doing the right thing.

Levesque began her career as a registered nurse and expanded her education over time, earning a diploma from Fleming College, a nursing degree from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Health Administration from the University of Toronto. A career built on learning: General Jennie Carignan’s path to leadership

General Jennie Carignan will be honoured by Algonquin College this June with an honorary degree that recognizes a lifetime of service andGen. Jennie Carignan leadership. Her work has taken her from early engineering studies to the highest military position in the country, and the recognition arrives at a moment when her influence is felt across the Canadian Armed Forces and beyond.

As Chief of the Defence Staff, General Carignan is responsible for a vast and complex organization. Alongside the Deputy Minister of National Defence, she leads a defence staff of more than 120,000 people in uniform and in civilian roles, guiding operations at home and abroad. Despite the scale of the job, she often describes her role in straightforward terms. Her task, she said, is to provide clear military advice and help the government understand the choices in front of it.
