Algonquin College’s new Building Conservation degree program will develop the tradespeople of tomorrow while fighting climate change

Registration is now open for Algonquin College’s new Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) degree program, which will be offered exclusively at the College’s Heritage Institute in Perth, Ont.

This program, unique in Canada, is designed to prepare students for a career in heritage conservation and the revitalization of the built environment to sustain our future, fight climate change and be good stewards of our physical heritage. The need for sustainability-focused conservationists is growing by the day as a result of Canada’s aging infrastructure, and this program will serve as a launching pad for talented new conservationists to begin making a difference.

The program has a dual focus that will see students gain an understanding of the theories and practices behind building conservation — including preservation, restoration and rehabilitation techniques that will sustain existing buildings rather than sending them to the landfill — and the practical, hands-on skills of a heritage-minded craftsperson. Coursework will range from in-class study like project management, traditional material sciences and conservationist business fundamentals to workshop-oriented learning like carpentry fundamentals, joinery, timber framing and log building construction. Additionally, the program features three paid co-op terms, which will provide students with significant real-world training in their craft.

Registration is open for the Fall 2024 intake. For additional information, please visit the Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) (Honours) program page.
