Algonquin College unveils next-generation science labs, advancing research and learning in the National Capital Region

FEBRUARY 3, 2026 (Ottawa, Ont.) — Algonquin College officially opened its new state-of-the-art Pìwànak — Algonquin Centre for Science and Innovation (PACSI) on Feb. 2, 2026. Featuring more than 20,000 square feet of cutting-edge lab space, PACSI will serve as an unprecedented resource for science education and research in Ottawa and beyond.

The opening of Pìwànak marks a significant milestone for Algonquin College and for science education in the region. Its advanced laboratory spaces expand Ottawa’s research and training capacity and, through partnerships with regional science and research organizations, position Pìwànak as a hub for innovation.

“This is an important moment for the College, and a significant event for science education in the National Capital Region. These new lab spaces will provide a significantly enhanced learning experience for our students, providing a hands-on advantage that will serve them well in their future careers,” said Algonquin College President and CEO Claude Brulé.

This new space, which was supported by a $1 million College Equipment Renewal Fund contribution, includes:

  • New biosafety level 2 labs
  • New chemistry labs
  • One new analytical instrumentation lab
  • One new applied research lab equipped to support projects in the bio sciences
  • One new applied research lab equipped to support projects in environmental monitoring

The professional research capacity offered by these new labs will allow the College to expand its partnerships throughout the Ottawa area, providing research opportunities in everything from artificial intelligence and genetic testing to urban farming practices and biopolymer development, with many more research possibilities on the horizon.

“We are transforming how learners engage with science and our research community,” said Dr. Julie Beauchamp, Senior Vice President, Academic. “By working in advanced analytical instrumentation suites, biosafety level 2 labs and applied research environments, learners don’t just study science, they practice it. That experience accelerates learning, strengthens research capacity, and ensures our graduates are prepared to step confidently into complex academic, research and industry roles.”

Testimonials:

“PACSI represents a forward-looking investment in biotechnology education, enabling students to build practical, career-ready skills and supporting collaborative research that strengthens the region’s life sciences ecosystem.”
