Algonquin College and Porter Airlines strengthen aviation education and training through new agreement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA — May 22, 2024 Algonquin College is pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with Porter Airlines, marking a significant commitment to enhancing educational and career opportunities in the aviation sector. This new strategic partnership is poised to leverage Porter’s position as a leading provider of air services in Ottawa, with the official signing ceremony that took place on May 21 during the grand unveiling of Porter’s Airlines’ new maintenance facility in Ottawa.

Building on a foundation established in 2016, this renewed collaboration focuses on areas of development:

  • Employment and talent management
  • Hands-on training at Porter’s new Ottawa hangar
  • Academic program development
  • Educational scholarships

The partnership also aims to support the Aircraft Maintenance Technician and Aviation Management programs in developing competency-based training programs for young women from minority groups or in rural settings.

All these initiatives are designed to align with the growing needs of the aviation industry and Porter’s strategic goals, as the airline cements its status as Ottawa’s hometown airline.

Claude Brulé, President of Algonquin College, expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed partnership: “Our collaboration with Porter Airlines is a cornerstone of our strategy to integrate industry-leading practices into our curriculum and provide our students with unmatched real-world experience. This partnership not only aligns with our mission to transform hopes and dreams into lifelong success but also enhances our contributions to the aviation industry.”

Michael Deluce, CEO of Porter Airlines, commented on the partnership’s strategic importance: “Porter Airlines is set to be the number one airline serving Ottawa this summer, not just in terms of the number of destinations and daily flights, but as the city’s key airline partner. This MOU with Algonquin College represents our belief in the potential of Ottawa. We’re committed to fostering the next generation of aviation professionals and are excited to integrate Algonquin’s hands-on educational approach with our commitment to service excellence and customer satisfaction.”

Further demonstrating their commitment to fostering future aviation professionals, Porter Airlines sponsored the participation of Algonquin College’s Aircraft Maintenance Technician students, Aviation Management students, and academic staff in this year’s Wings Careers in Aviation Expo. This engagement highlights the practical aspects of the partnership, enriching students’ industry exposure and professional development.

Algonquin College and Porter Airlines are dedicated to advancing a future where educational and industry collaboration drive innovation and excellence in aviation. This partnership enriches student education and training while supporting Porter’s goals for operational expansion and service excellence. Both institutions are committed to contributing to the economic and social development of Ottawa, reinforcing its status as a significant center for aviation.
