Algonquin becomes first Ontario college with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policy

Algonquin College is the first college in Ontario to have an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policy.

The new policy was announced Thursday by President Claude Brulé. It expresses Algonquin College’s beliefs, values and commitment regarding inclusion and diversity in the workplace.

“In Canada, our country aspires to equality and the protection of fundamental rights, building it into our own Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” Brulé said. “That belief in equality is also what we aspire to every day at Algonquin College. Not just because it is the law, but because it is the right thing to do.”

Brulé said the policy is the foundation upon which the College will build a “house for diversity,” and the plan to build this “house” is the new 2019-2022 Inclusion and Diversity Blueprint, a three-year action plan. “In real terms, these documents demonstrate how we will achieve the commitment I made to the Algonquin College community when I took the role of President: that we would be a place where everyone belongs.”

Message from the President – Potential OSSTF Walkout

Dear Learners and Colleagues,

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) has announced that it intends to hold a one-day walkout for all members on Wednesday, Dec. 4, unless an agreement is reached. If this occurs, all Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students. In addition, the two Ottawa French-language school boards have announced that their schools will have to close to ensure student safety.

While we remain optimistic that a settlement can be reached prior to the commencement of a one-day walkout, we would like to encourage any of you who could be impacted by this situation to consider how it might affect your normal family routines. Water disruption at Ottawa Campus: Update

Update: 1:53 P.M., Nov. 29, 2019

Facilities Management has lifted the boil-water advisory for occupants of the Residence, G, P and S Buildings. Water samples were tested in a lab and have come back clear. The water supply is safe and occupants can proceed with normal consumption purposes – including drinking, making juice, ice and infant formula, as well as for use in food preparation.

The initial boil-water advisory was issued as a result of Wednesday’s water main break and the subsequent repairs.

We regret any inconvenience this incident imposed on our College community, especially the learners and employees living and working in the affected buildings. Again, we appreciate the generous and continued patience exhibited by everyone.

Algonquin College announces first Vice President of Advancement

The following is a message from Claude Brulé, President and Chief Executive Officer of Algonquin College:

Dear Algonquin Community,

It is with great pleasure that I announce Mark Savenkoff as the successful candidate, of a national search process, as Algonquin College’s first Vice President of Advancement.

As part of our College’s ongoing continuous improvement processes, this past year, the Algonquin College Foundation transitioned its fundraising governance structure from an externally governed Foundation to a College administered Advancement Office. This evolution is becoming the norm within post-secondary education. The Vice President of Advancement position was created by progressing the existing Executive Director position to a member of the Executive Team. This change was deliberate to provide more direct involvement to support the College’s evolving needs and reliance on external partners. The new structure will continue to rely on volunteer champions and external partners to support student success and our vision to be a global leader in personalized, digitally connected, experiential learning.
