Final Exam Types

In-Person Exams

In-person exams may be paper- or computer-based. All in-person exams must be scheduled through our myAC Community Exam Booking System.

If your course requires a paper-based exam, you do not require access to a computer or the internet to complete your exam.

If your course requires a computer-based exam, you will need to book your exam in a computer lab and will require access to the internet in order to complete and submit your final exam.

Students booking exams on campus at Algonquin College will only be given lab based options for computer exam bookings, or classroom options for paper exam bookings within our myAC Community Exam Booking System. Students booking Out of Town Exams will need to confirm the computer and internet requirements with their proctors when scheduling their exams.

Online Non-proctored Exams

Online non-proctored exams are completed within your courses during the regularly scheduled course start/end dates. No booking is required for online exams.

Exam Booking and Writing Deadlines

If your course has an in-person exam, the deadline to book is typically a month before the end of the course, but please check all posted materials in your course outline and Course Information sheet for more exact deadlines.

Students will be charged a $50 late fee for booking a final exam past the booking deadline. Bookings or changes made after the deadline dates cannot be guaranteed.

Please also adhere to any posted writing or submission deadlines. If you happen to miss a writing deadline, you risk receiving a mark of F (failure) on the final assessment. The writing deadlines are typically posted in your online course calendar.

If you are not able to attend your in-person exam, you risk receiving the mark of F (failure) on the exam. Students who have missed their in-person exam due to illness must provide a medical note in order to receive permission to reschedule their exam. Additional charges may apply.

Exam Booking System

On-Campus Exams

If you are located within 100 km of Ottawa, you should complete your in-person exams on campus. You will receive an invitation to set up your account through the myAC Community Exam Booking System approximately 35 days before the exam booking deadline. You can only access the system after your account has been activated.

Starting September 1, 2018, evening and weekend parking fees will apply at the Ottawa campus. If you have a parking permit, you do not have to pay additional for evenings/weekends — your pass allows you to park on campus seven days a week, 6 am to 11:59 pm in your designated lot. More information regarding parking fees can be found on the Parking Services Evening and Weekend Parking webpage.

If you are not able to write your exam in-person during the regularly scheduled exam period, please contact our Exam Coordinator directly. Please note, additional fees may be required to book off cycle exams through the Test Centre.

Out of Town Exams

If you are located 100 km or more from Ottawa, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to write your exam(s) at a post-secondary institution in your area. If one is not in reasonable proximity, it is possible to write at an educational institution such as a high school under the supervision of a full-time professor, teacher, or appropriate designate. Proctors must be educational professionals, including professors, librarians, or their designates. To avoid conflict of interest concerns, the proctor may not be a relative, co-worker (including immediate supervisor), neighbour, friend, or person with the same address as the student.

Any fees charged by a proctor are the responsibility of the student. Colleges and universities often have Test Centers where they proctor exams on a regular basis. If you are not a student at their institution, there is often a charge. You would have to confirm the exam writing fees with your proctor and you will be responsible for the fee.

If there are no colleges in your area, any kind of educational institution is acceptable, such as libraries, high schools, tutoring centers, etc. Not all of these places proctor exams so it would be up to you to research this.

Please note that for computer-based exams, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure that the proctor has the appropriate software required to complete the exam. Students are not able to write final exams on their personal devices.

Once you have located an appropriate proctor, you will need to book your exam with them. This exam must be written by the exam writing deadline. After you have booked your exam with your proctor, you will need to fill out and electronically submit the Proctor Booking Confirmation Form located in our Exam Booking System. While you can book your exam with your proctor at any time, you will receive an invitation to set up your account through the myAC Community Exam Booking System approximately 35 days before the exam booking deadline. You can only access the system after your account has been activated.

You will need to include the following information:

  • Exam date and time
  • Proctor name and title
  • Proctor email address
  • Business Organization name and address (this is where the exam will be mailed)
  • Business phone number

Requests to write exams out of town will be reviewed and approved by the Exam Coordinator. If your proctor request is denied, you will receive an email indicating why your form was not accepted and requesting you to resubmit.
