How to be a Mentee and Apply

Criteria

Who can attend?

  • All Employees – NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!!! Only a desire to enhance leadership skills and abilities.

Expectations

A Mentee must…

  • be willing to devote a minimum of 2.5 hours a month to the relationship
  • work with a mentor for a period of time no less than 9 months
  • as part of required time commitment, attend 7 synchronous multimodal sessions:
    • 1 Orientation Session
    • 5 Peer Learning Sessions
    • 1 Sharing & Celebration Session
    • *See Peer Learning Sessions schedule for actual dates/times. Attendance at all sessions is required in order to successfully complete the program.
  • complete a Request to Participate Form (Mentee)it will be submitted to the Centre for Organizational Learning (COL).

Qualities of an Effective Mentee

A Mentee…

  • values receiving feedback and an opportunity to learn
  • honours the confidentiality of discussions/work with the mentor
  • values goal-setting as part of the mentor/mentee relationship
  • models analytical and reflective practice
  • is open to the views of the mentor and others (effective listener, communicator)
  • has demonstrated skills in problem solving
  • has effective interpersonal skills
  • is aware of the Algonquin College Leadership Requirements Model

How to Get Involved in the Leadership Mentoring Program

A call will go out from the Centre for Organizational Learning (COL) on myAC (at the start of the academic year) seeking interested participants.

If you would like to participate as a mentee:

  • review the Criteria/Expectations/Qualities for Participation above;
  • review the information on the Request to Participate Form (Mentee);
  • decide if this is an opportunity for you;
  • discuss with your direct supervisor your desire to participate in the program and outline the reasons why you would like to take advantage of this learning opportunity;
  • ensure you are able to attend all the Peer Learning Sessions;
  • complete the Request to Participate Form (Mentee) it will be submitted to the Centre for Organizational Learning (COL), and they will notify successful participants.

Note: The Algonquin College Leadership Mentoring program will save 30% of the Mentee seats for Black, Indigenous, and Racialized employees interested in becoming a Mentee. If you are interested in applying, please contact Rebecca Volk at volkr@algonquincollege.com.

Matching

  • The Center for Organizational Learning (COL) will match mentors with mentees based on: *the information in the Request for Participation Form (Mentee/Mentor)
  • the mentor’s strengths and areas of leadership expertise as compared to the mentee’s identified areas for growth
  • The COL will communicate the pairings to all participants in the program as well as any other pertinent information

Note: The number of participants in the program will be dictated by the ability to match all mentees with mentors.
