In response to student and industry demand, our faculty have been hard at work enhancing existing courses with AI tools and creating new courses focused on Artificial Intelligence.
We’re excited to introduce CST2003: Foundations of AI-Assisted Development, a new course for all Level 1 students starting in Fall 2026. While the rest of the Level 1 core courses will continue to emphasize deep learning of key skills, CST2003 will prepare students to use AI tools responsibly when coding and problem-solving in upper levels. From the new course outline: Students practice prompt engineering, context management, and the use of structured, machine-readable specifications to guide AI tools and agentic systems. The focus is on ethics, security, and human-in-the-loop accountability while students practice providing precise project context, generating structured representation outputs, and using AI-assisted tools to automate routine technical tasks. Through hands-on labs, students apply AI to debugging, documentation support, lightweight test scaffolding, and simple agentic workflows, developing the judgment needed to integrate AI into their future career.
Also new for Fall 2026 and onward is CST8327: Artificial Intelligence in Software Development, offered as a program elective for Computer Programming, Computer Programming Analysis (Level 3 and 4 students), and Computer Engineering Technology – Computing Science (Level 5 students), subject to seat availability. From the new course outline: Students develop skills in prompt engineering, model-based development, AI-assisted development workflows, and the safe and ethical use of AI respecting copyright and privacy rights. Students perform fundamental AI lab activity modules and participate in a group project using generative AI tools to build applications incorporating chosen AI sub-components including image & voice recognition, use of external and locally-managed large language models, document analysis and summarization, and the use of retrieval-augmented generation to enhance chatbot and agentic interfaces.
A focus throughout programs on giving learners everything they need to wow future employers. Strong software development and critical thinking skills will be complemented by increasing incorporation of AI tools throughout core courses in levels 2 and beyond.
