I am transferring from another program. Can I get credit for some courses?
Yes, you can apply for an internal or/and external exemption if you feel that the courses are similar and you have taken them at an accredited college or university. Along with your application you will need to provide a copy of the course outline (syllabus) and an academic transcript to verify your grade in the course(s).

Is attendance mandatory?
Algonquin College has strict attendance policies that are explained in the individual course outlines (syllabus).

What about my uniform and hairstylist tools – do I need them the first day of class?
Yes, all uniforms and required hairstylist tools are required for the first day of classes. An information package is sent out once tuition payment is received which outlines all items required.

As an international student, how should I apply?
This program does not currently accept international students because applicants must be registered and working in a salon in Ontario in order to receive an invitation from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skill Development.

Are any of the courses available online?
No, this program is delivered in the classroom.

Is it possible for me to continue to work while I study?
The expectation is that students are released from work while they attend the in-school portion for the eight week semester. It is not recommended to work outside of school.

How long after signing up as an apprentice will I be to attend the basic level of apprenticeship at Algonquin?
It is recommended that an apprentice has at least six months of on-the-job training and the foundations of cutting, styling and colouring before attending Level 1 (Basic).

When I’ve finished the program what kind of work can I expect to get as a first job?
Graduates can expect to find employment opportunities in salons, resorts, cruise ships, hotels, clinics, or as an independent hairstylist or colour representative.

Does the program include hands-on learning?
Yes! Students in the Hairstyling Techniques – Apprenticeship program put the skills they learn in the classroom to the test with real-life training in our world-class hairstylist lab.

Are there any awards and bursaries?
Yes, the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is available to registered apprentices who have successfully completed their first or second year (level) of an apprenticeship program in one of the Red Seal trades.
