FAQ

How long is the program and when are classes?
This graduate certificate is designed with the professional in mind. The program is offered over 2 semesters, starting in September, January, and May. The academic program consists of two consecutive four-month terms. Students in coop complete their coop term in the four-months following completion of the academic program. There is no scheduled break. Students can expect to be on campus three or four days of the week (occasionally Saturdays) and may have classes up to 10:00pm (EST).

Are classes online or in-person?
All classes follow a hybrid course format which combines both in-person and out-of-class activities to reinforce student learning and development. The out-of-class component usually involves a wide range of learning activities, but often includes an online component. The face-to-face component enables relationship building and professional networking.

Can I work while doing this program?
We recognize that most students need to work to supplement their education. We have designed the course schedule to enable this. While some students have successfully maintained full-time employment while completing the program, keeping up with the workload can prove challenging. If you maintain a work schedule of more than 15 hours per week, you will need to be extremely organized, diligent and efficient to succeed. We recommend a concurrent work schedule of no more than 15 hours per week. The class times and condensed two semester format help students complete the certificate efficiently so that they can begin their career in the field of project management.

What would I learn?
With hands-on learning, the program integrates advanced concepts and provides exposure to key functional areas in project management, preparing students for leadership roles in project management. Students develop a critical understanding of the principles, performance domains and knowledge areas according to A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide)®.

The combination of in-class and practical elements of project management enables students to acquire creative, practical and advanced expertise that contribute to the effective management of the critical elements and ensure overall project success. As part of the curriculum, students are engaged in a real-world project which serves as a vehicle for incorporating and applying skills obtained during their academic studies and providing an opportunity to handle real-life situations.

Is there a work component to the program?
Yes. This program offers students an opportunity to apply for and secure a coop position. Coop positions are four-month, full-time, paid work terms which allow students the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge developed during the program. Students must meet and maintain coop eligibility requirements, details found here: https://www.algonquincollege.com/coop/coop-entry/project-management/.
