What is the entry requirement for this program?
You will need a recognized institution degree or diploma (college or university) in one of these areas: Health Science, Community Services, Food & Nutrition Management, Nursing, Recreation & Leisure, Hospitality & Tourism, Accommodations or Food & Beverage, or Business Administration.

Is there an interview or does that depend on my qualifications?
Most students enter the program based on their academic qualifications and work experience. Interviews are conducted if it is deemed necessary. The program coordinator will also meet with applicants if they have questions about the program.

Is it possible for me to continue to work while I study?
Yes! The program is designed to allow our students to continue to work. In both semesters, classes are condensed over three days with most courses beginning in late afternoons during the week and on weekends. Our program is a hybrid which means that the learning is done as a combination of class time and out-of-class activities which include online searches, discussions and activities, as well as self-directed and guided learning. This style means that in-class commitment is limited and allows you to complete the out-of-class work when you have the time. You may also take the program on a part-time basis.

Can I take the program part-time?
Yes, you may take the program on a part-time basis.

Is the field placement (as part of the second semester) arranged by the college or does the student find his or her own placement after the school year is complete?
You will complete a full-time, three-week, unpaid work experience (arranged by the College unless previously arranged with a current employer), where the student’s schedule is determined by the workplace host. All courses must be successfully completed before or during the work placement in order for the student to graduate.

When I complete this program, will I have the skills necessary to manage a retirement community?
Yes! The Algonquin College Retirement Communities Management graduate certificate program will provide the successful student with the ability and skills to manage a department in a retirement community or to administer the community as an Executive Director.
