Being accepted into the Co-op program does not guarantee a job. Co-op placement rates vary depending on economic stability and labour market trends. Co-op consultants are always working with employers to develop jobs.

For students to maximize their chances of finding employment they must:

  • Apply to all jobs for which they qualify
  • Undertake their own job search
  • Take advantage of the resources available through the Co-op office such as resume and cover letter review and interview practice, etc.
  • Be flexible and willing to try new things

Is there a fee for applying for my co-op work permit?

No, there is no cost related with the co-op work permit required for Co-op students. Your Co-op work permit only allows you to work in Co-op approved positions. You cannot work off campus unless the job relates to what you are studying in school, meets co-op requirements and is registered.

Do I need a co-op work permit to complete my co-op work term?

Yes, if you are not a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant, you must apply for a co-op work permit to work in Canada. This should be completed as soon as you are accepted into the program. Once the application is completed, it can take between 6-8 weeks or longer to get a work permit. Students will also need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in order to legally work in Canada.

Can international students apply for co-op?
