Rodent activity awareness and prevention
As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain clean and healthy College facilities, we ask for everyone’s cooperation in preventing rodent activity inside our buildings.
Pest control treatments are only effective when all potential food sources are removed from the area. If food remains accessible, it can interfere with existing pest control protocols and may delay, or even prevent, effective pest management.
To support these efforts, please take the following simple but important steps:
- Remove food daily: Take any food items home each evening. Only keep food or beverages in the office and kitchen areas if they are stored in properly sealed, glass containers.
- Be mindful of all food sources: This includes tea bags, coffee pods, and packaged snacks such as granola bars, chocolate, and candies.
- Clean up promptly: Wash dishes, mugs, and cutlery immediately after use. Avoid leaving dirty items in sinks or on counters overnight.
- Maintain clean surfaces: Keep kitchen counters and desk surfaces free of crumbs and spills at all times. Please note that maintaining cleanliness on high surfaces in kitchen areas is the responsibility of all space users.
- Remove potted plants temporarily if rodent activity is suspected, as they can attract pests seeking water or nesting material.
Remember: Mice have an extremely sensitive sense of smell and can detect food scents from long distances and across walls.
By following these practices, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of rodent activity and help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment for everyone.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in keeping our campus pest-free.
The snow season is here! How to stay safe on campus this season
Safety is our number one priority. If you notice an icy patch or snow drift that is impeding accessibility, please reach out to our Service Desk at extension 7710 or via email at 7710@algonquincollege.com.
Follow these tips to navigate snowy weather securely, especially when facing icy surfaces:
Awareness is Key
While walking through parking lots or sidewalks, keep your phone in your pocket and ensure you can be aware of the condition of the path in front of you as you make your way into buildings. Temperatures change numerous times throughout the day so try to observe if you are dealing with icy conditions. Be extra cautious and follow these tips below during the winter.
Footwear Matters
Invest in insulated, waterproof boots with a robust tread. Choose shoes that provide excellent traction to prevent slipping on icy walkways. Avoid smooth-soled shoes, as they can increase the risk of accidents.
Walking Techniques
When venturing out on icy surfaces, adopt a cautious walking style to maintain stability:
- Take Smaller Steps: Short, deliberate steps help to keep your balance on slippery surfaces.
- Slow Down: Reduce your walking pace to avoid sudden slips and falls.
- Bend Your Knees: Slightly bending your knees lowers your center of gravity, adding an extra layer of stability.
- Wide Steps: Distribute your weight evenly by taking wider steps. This simple adjustment can significantly reduce the risk of slipping.
Embrace the “Penguin Walk”
Channel your inner penguin by pointing your feet slightly outward and shuffling along. This walking technique, although amusing, enhances stability on icy terrain.
Community Safety Begins with You
Let’s work together to create a safe and secure College environment. By following these simple guidelines, you will be capable of navigating winter with ease.
Stay warm, stay safe, and savor the beauty of winter responsibly.
This snow season safety advisory is brought to you by Facilities Management, dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable, and sustainable learning environment for the College Community.
