AI in Canada

The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) – Companion document

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are poised to have a significant impact on the lives of Canadians and the operations of Canadian businesses. In June 2022, the Government of Canada tabled the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) as part of Bill C-27, the Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2022. The AIDA represents an important milestone in implementing the Digital Charter and ensuring that Canadians can trust the digital technologies that they use every day. The design, development, and use of AI systems must be safe, and must respect the values of Canadians.

Artificial intelligence ecosystem

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the greatest technological transformations of our age, and Canada is leading the way. AI has a significant impact on the lives and work of Canadians, offering both opportunities and challenges. That’s why the Government of Canada is bringing together international experts, championing smart regulation, building communities of research, encouraging homegrown talent and supporting a diverse ecosystem of businesses to advance the responsible development and use of AI. More recently, Budget 2024 has proposed a $2.4 billion investment to continue securing Canada’s AI advantage.

The Canadian AI Association (CAIAC)

Formerly known as the Canadian Society for the Computational Studies of Intelligence (or Société canadienne pour l’étude de l’intelligence par ordinateur), CAIAC’s mission is to foster excellence and leadership in research, development and education in Canada’s artificial intelligence community by facilitating the exchange of knowledge through various media and venues.

The Pan-Canadian AI Strategy

The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy strengthens Canada’s leadership by fostering world-class research and top-tier talent in AI.

Privacy and artificial intelligence (AI)

Technologies like generative artificial intelligence (AI) are fueled by the massive collection of data, including Canadians’ personal information. Addressing the privacy impacts of technological advancements such as generative AI is one of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s strategic priorities.

Responsible Use of AI in Government

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies offer promise for improving how the Government of Canada provides digital services. As we explore the use of AI in government programs and services, we are ensuring it’s governed by clear values, ethics and laws.
