Student Support Lab

Please note that there are currently no appointments available with a Pembroke Student Support Lab Coach.

Support may be accessed in the following ways:

Free virtual coaching appointments in Math, Writing, ESL, Presentation Skills, Anatomy & Biology, Computers, Study Skills, and Research may be available through the Ottawa Campus’ Coaching Lab.

Note: If there is no virtual option available for your preferred subject, refer to the Instructions for AC Online, Perth, and Pembroke students to book virtual appointments with Ottawa Campus coaches. 

Pembroke Campus Peer Tutoring matches students who are experiencing difficulties in a course with student tutors for one-on-one tutoring. The service is designed to help students with course-specific difficulties and is available to all Algonquin College students.

Note: View available tutors by logging in to the booking platform with your AC credentials. Tutoring sessions are $9.00/hour. Sponsorship options are available to both domestic and international students.

The Pembroke Campus Learning Strategist can provide assistance in the following areas: time management, note-taking, assignment planning, review & study skills, test preparation & strategies, group work, problem solving, essay writing, oral presentations, social coaching, managing stress & anxiety, and self-advocacy.

The Library offers a number of Workshops on various topics which can be attended virtually.

The Learning Portal provides 24/7 virtual access to open learning resources, tools, and learning supports, available in both English and French, in the following categories: Learning Online, Study Skills, Citation & Research, Writing & Communication, Digital Media Assignments, and Learning Math.

 

How Coaches Can Help

Coaches can guide students through subject matter, but will not complete students’ work for them.

Coaches can provide assistance with the following:

  • Review of concepts
  • Introduction to software
  • Help to develop self-editing techniques
  • Clarification of concepts and questions

Coaches CANNOT provide assistance with any of the following:

  • Editing or proofreading of assignments
  • Completing of assignments
  • Answers to questions in students’ assignments or tests

Preparing for Your Appointment

In order to get the most benefit from the time you have with a coach, arrive at or connect to your coaching session prepared with the following:

  • Any specific questions you have for your coach related to the coaching subject
  • Materials for which you need support, such as textbooks, course notes, etc.
  • A piece of your own writing, such as an essay, a research paper, etc. (for writing coaching)
  • Any course work you are struggling to understand

Who Can Book an Appointment?

Appointments are for Pembroke Campus students only.  Ottawa and Perth students may book with the Coaching Lab.

Maximum Appointments Per Day/Week

Book up to a maximum of one hour a day. 

Book up to a maximum of two hours a week.

Book up to two weeks in advance.

What if There are No Available Appointments?

If there are no appointments showing at your preferred time, please check back closer to the appointment time, or contact library staff to inquire about availability:

Note: Ottawa Campus’ Coaching Lab offers backup Coaching services to Pembroke students. If appointments with Pembroke Coaches are unavailable, please visit the Ottawa Library’s Coaching Lab website 

Cancelling an Appointment

If you cannot attend your appointment, you are expected to cancel as early as possible in advance of your appointment time.  Please cancel by clicking on the “Reschedule” button in your confirmation email.

Missed Appointments

  • Twenty-four hours, and/or two hours, prior to your scheduled appointment time, a reminder will be sent to your College email address.
  • If you have not arrived for your appointment within 10 minutes of its scheduled start time, the appointment will be cancelled and made available for other students to book.
  • Failure to arrive on time for your appointment could result in your appointment being marked as ‘No Show’.
  • Students credited with two No Shows in a semester will be suspended from using the Student Support Lab for the remainder of that semester.

Appeal Process

If you wish to appeal a ‘No Show’ ruling, you must email Library staff at illpemb@algonquincollege.com within 48 hours to discuss the situation in detail. Extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.
