Message from the Senior Vice President, Academic

Dear Colleagues and Learners,

As we head into the Winter term, I have a few important updates and reminders. First and foremost, the provincial shutdown is expected to continue until Saturday, January 23.

As the President outlined before the holidays, the College will continue to minimize face-to-face instruction and promote the delivery of remote academic instruction whenever possible. That said, our campuses will continue to operate within the new restrictions for academic activities and services.

Classes will begin as scheduled next week (Monday, January 11th for most post-secondary programs; Tuesday, January 12th for AC Online). Ontario’s shutdown will affect some academic areas:

  • On-campus Exceptions: Designated health programs and those programs that can have 10 or fewer persons in a given learning space will begin their on-campus activities as originally scheduled.
  • On-campus Restrictions: Due to the shutdown, the remaining programs that have on-campus learning activities scheduled will need to make adjustments. Necessary adaptations to on-campus learning activities will be made at the program/course level and may include make-up activities and re-scheduling. Any students affected by adjustments to in-person learning will be contacted by a program representative by Friday, January 8.
  • Co-ops, practicums and placements: Scheduled placements will continue in those cases where a business or partner continues to operate in compliance with the regulations and accept students. For those experiences postponed by the shutdown, alternative arrangements will be examined on a program-by-program basis.
  • Apprenticeships: Most apprenticeships slated to begin this week will instead begin the week of Monday, January 25. Apprentices will be contacted immediately regarding when their level will start. Two apprenticeships will start as planned: Automotive Service Technician (Day Release) on January 5 and Horticulture Technician on January 11.

Thank you to the entire College community for its ongoing flexibility and understanding. Your resiliency and creativity have allowed us to chart a course forward throughout the pandemic. We must continue to be nimble and innovative as we adjust to evolving government restrictions and the latest public health guidance. The health and safety of our students and employees remains our top priority as we continue our important academic mission in this new term.

Sincerely,

Chris Janzen

Senior Vice President, Academic
