Algonquin College Ranks Third in Canada for Research Partnerships in 2022
OTTAWA (Jan. 25, 2023) – Research Infosource Inc. released its annual ranking today for Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in 2022. Algonquin College is proud to announce it ranks third in the category of research partnerships with 168 partnerships and second in completed research projects with 155 projects.
“We are thrilled to see Algonquin College recognized as a leader in research partnerships amongst colleges in Canada,” said Claude Brulé, Algonquin College President and CEO. “Our commitment to applied research and innovation, as well as working closely with industry partners and community organizations, has resulted in this outstanding achievement.”
In addition to the research partnership results, Algonquin College ranked second in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) research income with $662,000 and ninth in Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) research income with $2,528,000.
Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Experiential Learning and Innovation at Algonquin College, noted, “Our ranking as second in SSHRC funding is not only an achievement for the College, but also for the communities we serve. Our research has a direct impact on addressing the needs and challenges of society and aligns with our core values of caring, learning, integrity and respect.”
Funding from the SSHRC has directly supported significant projects and outcomes achieved by our research teams working with community partners over the past three years and is in place to fund new initiatives with the College into 2025.

The Mamiwi Maadaadizi project: Coordinated through Algonquin College’s research facilities in Pembroke, the Mamiwi Maadaadizi project is a partnership with The Circle of Turtle Lodge with support from Algonquins of Pikwakanagan. The project was initiated to explore how to better address the needs of Indigenous learners in a rural context with its unique history, implicit biases, and culturally dominant ways of life, as well as building reconciliation for all students and community members. Over the past three years the project has already yielded several notable achievements, including the design and installation of the Medicine Wheel Garden and the creation of Elder in Residence and Kampus Kokum positions. This project is a testament to the college’s commitment to addressing the needs and challenges of Canadian society, particularly within the Indigenous communities it serves.
Social Innovation Lab: The SSHRC also provided foundational research funding to launch the Social Innovation Lab in the DARE District at Algonquin College in 2018. The funding support of $239,977 over two years allowed the lab to work with social sector organizations (such as social enterprises, non-profits, charities, and community organizations) by providing support through interdisciplinary students in all aspects of digital technology. Through this program, hundreds of students from the Schools of Advanced Technology, Media and Design have worked directly with a wide cross-section of community organizations across the city to enhance their use of digital technology in their social missions.
Social Procurement and Enterprise Development: Most recently, SSHRC has provided new funding to the Social Innovation Lab to launch Social Procurement and Enterprise Development (SPEnD). The funding of $356,883 (2022-2025) will allow the lab, in collaboration with the School of Business, to focus on the business and economic aspects in the four key pillars of social innovation: social procurement, social finance, social enterprise, and social entrepreneurship. The project will develop, curate, and disseminate novel foundational research on the capacity of Canada’s college sector for social procurement and social finance and contribute to community wealth building through research and development of market-driven social enterprises.
