Algonquin College Wins CICan ImpAct-Climate Challenge

Ottawa, ON, December 18, 2023 — Claude Brulé, Algonquin President and CEO, is pleased to share that Algonquin College has won the CICan’s ImpAct-Climate Challenge, with the highest number of submissions in the large institution category.
The project received over 2,100 entries from staff, students, and faculty across the country, from more than 46 colleges and institutes.
Institutional winners in each size category receive a bursary worth $3,000 for a student climate leader on their campus, and a custom recognition plaque.
“We take immense pride in the numerous students within our institution who, understanding the critical significance of climate action, actively engaged in this competition,” said Claude Brulé, Algonquin President, and CEO. “Their enthusiastic participation not only showcases their commitment but also serves as a testament to their dedication to learning practical measures for contributing to environmental well-being.”
In addition to the college award, Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) – Network Technology (NET) student Cineth Marakawatte was the winner of the $1000 grand prize draw in the CICan Climate Change contest.
Michael Anderson, computer networking professor with the School of Advanced Technology, championed the competition, encouraging faculty in various departments and schools to encourage students to participate in the contest.
“I’m deeply concerned about climate change,” said Anderson. “I’ve been slipping sustainability ideas into my courses for a while.” For his 60 students, taking part in the weekly quizzes allowed for an opportunity to swap out lower grades. “The purpose was to raise awareness about climate action and the whole competition was built around different actions we could take.”
About the Contest
Over six weeks, more than 2,100 entries from students, staff, and faculty at 46 CICan member colleges and institutes were received. Four institutions in particular distinguished themselves through their high levels of engagement in their respective size categories, earning them a $3,000 bursary to honour a student climate leader from their college or institute:
The winning institutions in each size category were identified based on the total number of entries received. Each winning institution will determine their own criteria for administering the bursaries.
