Algonquin College receives research grant to support survivors of intimate partner violence

OTTAWA (Dec. 18, 2023) – Algonquin College has received a $358,508 grant to further collaborative research supporting survivors of intimate partner violence. As part of the College and Community Innovation (CCI) program grants issued by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), this funding will strengthen collaborative research between Canadian colleges and partners from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of our exciting new project, Applying Concussion Recovery Technology to Support Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, at Algonquin College,” said Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Algonquin College. “This project not only offers invaluable experiential learning opportunities for our students but also addresses a critical community need. We extend our gratitude to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research grant for recognizing and supporting the significance of this initiative.”

The CCI program grant will support research on concussion recovery technology led by College’s Victimology Research Centre in partnership with Neurovine, a medical technology company in Ottawa. Neurovine has developed a concussion recovery electroencephalogram (EEG) headband which gives real-time information to help monitor and give advice on how to effectively speed up recovery. This project will bring a trauma-informed lens to support those who have experienced a concussion or traumatic brain injury caused by intimate partner violence. The project will connect survivors with an accessible and affordable recovery option and bring a trauma-informed approach to clinical settings.

“The hidden epidemic of brain injury from intimate partner violence is a complex issue that is deserving of further research, awareness and support, which is why the Victimology Research Centre is appreciative of the opportunities this grant provides,” said Alyssa Ferns, Professor, Police and Public Safety Institute and Victimology Research Centre. “Our research team has been working on a pilot project with Neurovine to incorporate feedback on recovery for those with lived experience of brain injury from intimate partner violence. We are pleased to be able to continue this work with our dedicated student research assistants, community collaborators and industry partner to support recovery for this population.”

The NSERC grant will be in effect for the next three years.
