Algonquin College Community Gathers on Earth Day to Celebrate New Scholarship for Learners in Environmental Sustainability Programs

OTTAWA (Tues., April 22, 2025) – Members of the Algonquin College community are gathering on Earth Day to celebrate the creation of a new endowed fund. Mrs. Hazel M. Patterson has donated $120,000 to establish an endowed scholarship that will support learners in programs that focus on environmental sustainability. The Hazel Smart-Patterson Environmental Scholarship will be awarded annually to two learners in one of the following programs:

Bringing innovation to life: over 120 student projects featured at Algonquin College’s Applied Research Day

The largest iteration of Algonquin College’s Applied Research Day occurred on April 11, with over 120 innovative student research projects presented under the theme Innovate, Impact, Inspire.

The event celebrated the culmination of months of dedicated work by talented learners and faculty, who collaborated on cutting-edge projects to address real-world challenges faced by industry, government, and community partners across diverse fields, including Computer Programming, Interactive Media Design, Mobile Application Development, and Engineering. Additionally, the event featured eight faculty-led projects from the Research Development Institute (RDI) at Algonquin College.

Industry Leaders Rally in Support of Algonquin College’s Team at Skills Ontario Competition 2025

Several industry leaders have joined forces to sponsor Algonquin College’s participation at the upcoming Skills Ontario Competition 2025. This event, held on May 5-6 of this year in Toronto, brings together top learners from across our province for a chance to compete in a variety of categories, such as architecture, welding, metal fabrication, geographic information systems, and many more. While some of these categories only compete in at the provincial level, others give winners a path to national and world competitions.

New Bursary Honours Centenarian Don Chutter, Supports the Next Generation of Construction Professionals in Ottawa

OTTAWA (Monday, April 7, 2025) – The Ottawa Construction Association (OCA) and the General Contractors Association of Ottawa (GCAO) have donated $15,000 to Algonquin College to establish the Don Chutter Construction Bursary. This endowed bursary will support learners experiencing financial need in one of over 20 construction-related programs in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE).

Chutter, the bursary’s honouree, is a 100-year-old veteran of Ottawa’s construction industry. His many decades of service to our community have been recognized by lifetime memberships in both the OCA and the GCAO and many other accolades.

“Don Chutter represents the best values in our industry,” said John DeVries, OCA’s President and General Manager. “His leadership, his unwavering commitment to excellence and integrity, his service to the community—these are the values we want the Don Chutter Construction Bursary to inspire in the next generation of construction professionals.”

“The OCA and the GCAO are valuable partners in our shared responsibility to support the construction industry in our region,” said Mark Savenkoff, Vice President, Advancement and Strategy at Algonquin College. “Many of our ACCE alumni join the companies these associations represent, and we’re so thankful for this new bursary and the positive impact it will have for our learners.”
